Will I ever drink water normally again?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost exactly 5 months out and I can drink Water normally again. The first few months were the worst and with as much as I like to run I was worried about never being able to drink without that annoying pain in my chest. I still don't drink an entire bottle like I used to, but having a few good gulps is fine. The first few weeks after surgery I could feel ever bit of Water as it worked its way down my esophagus and it hurt! Now my only concern is that my stomach feels immediately full and water kind of starts to bubble up back into my throat if I drink too much. Also, I think you learn to adapt to not taking huge chugs anymore. From someone who was very upset that I couldn't drink normally, it's nothing I even notice anymore. Good luck to you!

So if I chug Water and it still sort of hurts 3mos out is it dangerous? (terrified of slippage)

Yes and no. If you were used to chugging Water like I used too then the answer is No and it has made me sad in the past. You will however be able to drink more easily the further out you get. Chin up

You could have Water nausea or not like cold or room temp which is what I had.

Cold/room temp felt like I was dropping stones into my stomach and then I would get the foamy spit up from the water so I had warm water (blugh) in hospital and just drank warm things like Decaf tea when home.

I wish I wanted Water as much as you do! I hate water. I just bought crystal light and have been adding lemon to trick myself to believe it isn't water. I'm having a hard time getting all my fluids because of this. Plus, I get bad stomach cramps which I'm looking into with the doctor tomorrow...

It does get better. I am an admitted "chugger". Or was. I can, at times drink more than others, but you have to listen to your new you and learn when to stop.

Welcome to the club.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
