Lap Band for people with BMI 30

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I have my surgery scheduled for the 14th Febuary and im having lots of last minute fears.

My BMI is only 30 which is low compared to most people getting the surgery. I have been reading a lot about success rates and have read that people with BMI 30 and under do not have the sucess that larger patients do. has anyone had the surgery with BMI 30 or under? is it worth it fore me? I have struggled with my weight all my life and im really counting on this surgery to change things around.

i am self paid, doing it in mexico (no dr in BC Canada would do it unless over 35)

i am paying $5000 for surgery out of pocket about $6500 with cost of flights acc etc

If you're only 30 BMI your weight loss will not be as dramatic as someone who is 50 BMI or even 40 BMI. But, even if you can use the band(tool) to get down to 25 or less, it may be worth it. Just be aware that you're not going to have the support of a local surgeon unless you've found some one who is willing to assume the liability of a Mexican surgeon?

Support in the form of a local doctor is easily worth 50% or more of the journey. Who will be filling you?

i have no choice but to use a mexican surgeon because no local DR would do it,

I will have the fil done by Dr Ric Arseneau, in Vancouver.

BMI of 25 would be great! I am not expecting anymore than that.

If you always struggled with your weight the band should be a great help. When you are/at s good fill it is pretty simple to maintain your weight.

Good luck!

I would say its doable but you will probably lose weight slower then someone that is larger. Not impossible but you may just need more patience then us.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
