Meds With Meals?

Recommended Posts

I haven't had to really worry about it until recently when I was put on Vitamin D by my doctor, but I've often wondered how people go about taking their various medications that must be taken with food, since we aren't supposed to drink with meals? With my Vit D, I've been taking it about half an hour before I plan to eat, but it's not something that will make you sick to your stomach or some such when taken on an empty stomach. How do ya'll handle it?

For any meds I have to take with a meal, I take them with a gulp of Water. One gulp is not going to destroy my band or fill me up so I can't eat.

For my Vitamin D, I take that in a liquid form so this issue doesn't present itself.

For my bigger pills I had to cut them up into 8-10 pieces and just for caution I put them in applesauce to get them down. But i do find that a sip or two of Water before a meal has not had any negative effect for me. I do avoid the liquid after eatting, though, when I have felt I needed a sip or two because of a crumb in th ethraot or something a ittle spicey it made me feel miserable.

I cheat and take it with a sip of Water. Usually, meds are to be taken with meals because they may tend to upset an emtpy stomach. If you're worried about cheating with even a sip of water, you could just wait the required amount of time 20-30 minute, and take it after your meal while you still have a good amount of food in your stomach.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
