Can't burp! Too early for carbonation?

I'm two weeks out from surgery and constantly feel a lump in my throat and chest from not being able to burp. I try to induce them but it just doesn't work. It's a special kind of agony that I'm getting pretty damn sick of!!

Anyone else have this problem?

Is it too early to get some flavored carbonated Water to resolve this annoying thorn in my side throat?

Don't do the carbonation anything. Or, try it once and you'll discover what I am talking about. 2 weeks out is still VERY early. As I am sure you have read here, the first month is tough. We weren't kidding :)

Did you have a hiatal hernia repair? I did and the feeling you are describing went on for well over 3 weeks. You have to know deep down that your stomach just underwent a dramatic trauma ... right? Things are going to be different for a while.

Just know that things do begin to return to some form of normalcy, so, just keep doing the right things you know you need to be doing. It will get better.

I had the problem of feeling a bump in my throat after my surgery and it because they put an endoscopic devise down my throat to see if my sleeve had any leaks it took about 14-17 days for it to go away. Have you tried gasX for the burping?

Also I would put carbonated bubbles in my tummy now, nope nodda chance because i dont want to end up back in the hopital for causing my stomach to burst. But you may try calling your Doctor and seeing what they can do for you, ie: Rx etc.

I actually didn't have a hernia luckily! I should clarify- I can do very shallow burps but not the ones that make you feel relief!

It sounds like the carbonation thing went very wrong for you! I guess I just need to get used to these little annoyances and look at the bigger picture. It's hard though when you're in the thick of it!

No dear, it is not too early......It's too LATE. As in no more, ever.......never, nada, nien, neit, or "Just don't do it". NO carbonation period.

I agree...no carbonation...nope, nadda, walking usually helps relieve gas pressure, but...

Call your doctor!

I had the barium leak test so nothing down my throat...and I didn't even consider Gas-X but you can bet I'm popping some now as I type! Thanks for the suggestion. Crossing my fingers it will work!

It could very well be trapped gas from having laparoscopic surgery. You're only 2 weeks post-op after all. Gas X would probably help. I can also guarantee that carbonated beverages will make you feel worse, not better. Most surgical teams advise against drinking soda at all after surgery. It can cause you a lot of pain and gas, at the very least. The jury is still out on the clinical research side as to whether it "stretches" the sleeve. Your sleeve will stretch out some over time. It's to be expected. You can also expect that in a few more weeks you will feel much better.

Well, let's just take a look at it objectively. I had 85% of my stomach removed. 2 weeks out, the stomach tissues are still quite swollen. Not just swollen outwards from the stomach, but inwards, too ... right? My capacity at this point was miniscule. It was difficult enough to consume 2 oz of liquids. I have no idea what amount of space the carbonation takes when it is released from the soda, but I do know that when I did try my first drink of soda, it was at about 6 months out and one small sip was difficult to handle. So, imagining what that would be like 2 weeks post just makes me shiver.

Now, you are most likely remembering the days of yore when you had 100% of your stomach and a carbonated beverage temporarily helped an uneasy stomach whether it was just stuck gas bubbles or an acid stomach (which also releases gas). The carbonated beverage would temporarily neutralize the acids and the carbonation would push you over the top to where you were able to burp.

So now, you believe that since this method worked with 100% of my stomach, it will work with 15% of my stomach. Well ... IMO, it doesn't. Your stomach is not the same. Like others have posted, try some gas-x or some other proven method to neutralize stomach acid. Exercise also helps to jiggle things around and can help.

Good luck and report back how/if you were able to resolve your issue.

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...
