I'm just starting this journey(first surgical consult2/19) and this may seem like a trivial question, but does everyone have to give up coffee with the sleeve? Like forever? Just bought a Nespresso coffee maker and am wondering if that was a poor decision. Thanks!

All docs have different guidelines.

Mine allowed Decaf and at 6 month post-op said I could try caf again and see how it went.

My surgeon allows 1 cup a day after 4 weeks but I don't tolerate it very well. I am sticking to tea for now.

I gave it up 2 months pre-op. None for 6 mons post-op & then got approval to do 1 cup. So i started out mixing half Decaf w half reg until I could tolerate it. Now I do 1 reg cup daily with no problem.

I never drank coffee, only tea...but my understanding is that coffee is a diuretic, so not good; then the caffeine could be an appetite stimulus, so not good; but most doctors let you have Decaf after "x" amount of time and usually want you to limit it to one a day... best thing is to ask your doctor or NUT about their opinions on the matter. For me, giving up my Diet Coke was the nightmare... no carbonated beverages since I started this journey...and I don't miss it at all! :) :)

i agree Please ask your Nut there recommendation about coffee, because each physician has a different recommendation. I couldn't tolerate coffee too soon. But i certainly do have a cup every day now. However, i do not tolerate or take carbonated beverages. Tried one sip or two and instantly have problems. I don't even crave the soda/pop any more. Never could imagine that i would so easily give up Pepsi my old favorite.

Good Luck

Mine didn't say I couldn't. She even told me that she'd never be able to do my hours without it either. :) I told them straight out-I get up for work at 3:45am, no way could I survive without my morning java. I am at my desk by 5am and I do a split shift 5-9 then 12-4ish. I'll drink tea for now, but when I get the green light-it's java time! LOL

I'm going to be sleeved Monday and just had my pre-op and my doc said no restrictions on coffee or tea with caffeine. I can drink it day after surgery if I want. Not sure if I really will.. Kinda nervous about the coffee acid upsetting my new tummy.

I just asked the nut about this last week. She said 8 oz per day of coffee is okay post op once you are able to get in 64 oz of Fluid per day, in addition to the caffeine.

I was a big coffee fan, 2 cups of heavy espresso every morning. My surgeon allows a cup of coffee after surgery. I am astonished at how my taste has changed since the sleeve, and my sleeve definitely does not like coffee. To my astonishment I do not even like the smell of my favorite brew. I tried o-n-e s-i-p of coffee and started throwing up, felt wretched for 6 hours. However I've had caffeine withdrawal headaches, so currently I am putting ½ tsp of instant coffee powder in my morning Protein Shake. It sits better if I put half a banana in the shake too. I am weaning myself completely off coffee, but gradually.

I did give it up pre surgery and went with Decaf so as to avoid the cafeine headache. My surgeon said one cup a day was okay after surgery (when you can tolerate it) but because of the diuretic effect and the need to keep hydration up you should not have more than that. The first stages of healing are very critical and you are really forcing yourself to sip liquids all day to take in as close to 64 oz as you can. From what I have been told dehydration is not fun and will put you back into the hospital. You probably won't want it for a few weeks after surgery anyway. I think every surgeon is different, but just like raising kids, listen to all and do what makes the most common sense for you. I plan on having my cup as soon as I can! I did give up sodas though, not good for you at all after surgery. Diet or regular.

I was never much of a coffee drinker before. Now, I do drink some Decaf and really enjoy it -- I find it great if I mix it with sugar-free chocolate.

I also found it was a great way to make Protein shakes. I've had this gizmo for years:

http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Coffee-BVMC-FM1-20-Ounce-Frappe/dp/B002FWMF8G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1391728948&sr=8-2&keywords=mr.+coffee+cafe+latte

I make a Protein shake I love using that machine with decaf coffee and a scoop of carb-free vanilla Protein Powder, etc.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
