I didn't anticipate losing this much weight pre surgery

Recommended Posts

My first visit with the surgeon was on October 31st. After that visit I have changed my diet to get used to the changes after surgery. Well, since that day I have lost 45 lbs. I only have 13 more pounds to lose before my BMI is at 40. I still a few more appointments and tests to complete before my surgeon will be submitting my case to insurance (if all goes well). I really have my heart set on this surgery, but I don't want to stop the healthy changes I've made now. I am torn on what to do.

First of all, congratulatins on your weight loss so far. That is awesome progress.

Secondly, here's my take on this. I have lost weight (sometimes significant weight) over and over and over again. Losing weight for me is not the problem. Keeping off the weight is the problem...I always end up fat and unhappy again. I say every time that THIS is going to be the last time. That I can keep up with the changes on my own. That I will make the life changes necessary all on my own. But I don't because I can't. I need a tool, which is why I finally decided to have surgery. I am going to follow every single rule because this WILL be the last time I do this. I can't do it on my own...but I can do it.

However, this is just me. You absolutely have to do what you feel is the very best thing for you. You know yourself and your own weight loss history better than anyone else and only you can decide if this surgery is what you need. Whatever you decide, I wish you the very best of luck on your journey. :)

They will always be there to perform the surgery. I think you should keep doing what you are doing and if it's not working, you can always opt for surgery later on.

Thank you. I feel very much like you, I need this tool to keep the weight off for life. I'm just afraid that I wont get approved for insurance purposes if I go below 40bmi.

but...the doctor has you documented for the original weight and BMI before you started your pre-surgery program, right? So I don't think that will effect the surgery...but one can never tell these days! Don't stop what you are doing, but do talk to your doctor about your concerns to put your mind at ease.
Good Luck!

It is my understanding that what the doctor typically sends to insurance is your original weight--the one that qualified you for surgery. I had the same fears--checking with my surgeon put my mind at ease. Good luck!

Thank you, I will do that and hopefully get some insight on how it all works. haha

Sabrina, this is a very personal decision. For me, WLS is like marriage - if you have any doubts, just wait. You can always do it later.

There is truth in that diets result in weight gain 95% of the time and the weight does not stay off. You can research that. However, you are the only one who knows your body and your ability to keep weight off. Personally, it kept coming back and the older I get the harder it is to lose it. WLS was the right decision for me. Good luck however you choose.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
