Gaining after Surgery

Recommended Posts

Has anyone GAINED after surgery? When I first got home I was up 8 lbs in Fluid. My kidneys were slow waking up. I lost it all in 2 days and then a little more. I am 2 weeks post op and starting to eat pureed foods now. With the transition I have gained a couple of pounds. Is this normal just because of having something more solid in you? When I went for my checkup I was down a total of 4lbs. But my Wii shows me gaining a half pound or more for three days in a row since then (about 2 lbs). That would put me at just a 2 lb loss so far. That is really slow. I am around a 40 bmi and just wonder if it has anything to do with it. I have already lost about 50lbs before surgery from my top weight. Am I just being impatient?

Be patient for sure. I am 5 1/2 weeks out and in a stall, but I am keeping up with my weight training and exercise. My hope is that my body is in a muscle exchange, then loss will kick in eventually. Exasperating - yes. Uncommon - no.

I am trying to stay on track. I am getting in my Protein but my calories are still low. I just can't get it all in yet. Do you think my body is hanging onto fat like starvation mode?

First thing to do is breathe!

Your body is adjusting to its new reality and it will be a bit all over the shop for the next few weeks. Stick to your plan - Water first, then Protein and get moving.

And throw away the Wii !!!! Stop weighing every day - the numbers will be up and down because its early days, once a week is plenty for now.

I know it's all new and you are keen to see results. I don't know how long it took you to get to your surgery weight but you can't expect to lose it all over night.

If you stick with what you've been asked to do, your sleeve will work to get you the results you want.

So for now, keeping sipping your Water, get in as much Protein as you can and keep moving. You are so enthusiastic, you will get there, just a little bit of patience and be kind to yourself :-)

Your body has been through a major trauma, so be kind to yourself and just stick to the plan your doctor gave you for Water, Protein, and exercise / movement. Some people drop a lot of weight the first month, some don't. Everybody's body is unique and the challenge is to find the right balance of Protein, Water and calories for you. But that comes later after your body is healed from the surgery which can take 2 - 4 weeks.

If you want to weigh on a scale, invest in a good one, don't rely on a video game to accurately measure your weight!

Good luck, I know you will be successful with your weight loss journey!

Thanks everyone. I do have a good scale but they show the same. That's why I use the wii. It tracks everything including exercise. I do probably need to only do once a week, though. I will learn some patience and do fine. It's just good to hear it from others!!!! I love this group!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
