Best post op diet?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting the sleeve on Wednesday, the 5th. I didn't have a pre-op diet, just liquids on Tuesday and nothing on Wednesday. I've had the lapband (still do, getting it removed on Wednesday as well) so I'm familiar with the meal changes. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for what worked best for them? I had the band 4 years ago, and my cravings for food never went away. I'm on 2 weeks clear, 2 weeks full, 2 weeks soft foods then solids. Just wondering what any of you found was best to fill you up, and also give you enough energy to get through the day. Thanks!

Our diets pre and post are very similar. sugar free Popsicles are great. Helps with liquids and I personally like the cold. Nothing warm appeals to me now. Just get plenty of rest. Good luck to you.

Protein, Protein and more protein is the best thing to fill you up - but I don't think you will have issues about not feeling full with a sleeve ;-) I found that denser protein like tuna and red meat took me longer to get back in to my diet but moist chicken, eggs, cheese, yogurt etc are easier to start with.

Stick with your eating schedule (2weeks liquid etc) as that really gives your stomach a chance to heal and recover. In the first couple of weeks, the priority is Water - sip, sip, sip. protein is less important at that stage.

But it won't be easy for the first few weeks, it's different from any previous experience. I was shocked at how little I ate but felt fine energywise. You will learn quickly that there is such a thing as eating one mouthful too much and paying for it!!!!

But it is so worth it. My life has transformed and my health issues are all resolved....

Good luck, I wish you well :-))))

I am unusual - I have never had a Protein shake! I used fortified milk and worked hard to get my Protein in. Worked for me, bloods have always been good and weightloss steady all the way to goal.

I wanted to eat in such a way that I could get back to normal life - and shakes didn't fit my view of how the majority of the population ate. I also eat out 3 or 4 times a week through work and I felt I needed to be able to eat my protein, not drink it. But that's just me and many on here swear by them... ????

What kind of milk is that?

You fortify your milk by adding skimmed milk powder to it. A tablespoon adds 3.5g of Protein with no effort.

So every time I had milk, I added a few tablespoons and I could get way more Protein in with little effort. I also added it to things like scrambled eggs, Soup, yougurt etc. Doing it three or four times a day added between 25 to 30g protein without me noticing....

Just a different way of doing it - and it was also pretty cheap....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
