Carbs are NOT my friend

Recommended Posts

Since I hit the green zone in early December, I can not tolerated carbs (specifically from bread/grains) AT all. Immediately, even after 1 bite, I feel like my chest is going to rip open and explode whenever I eat any type of high-carb food. Potatoes are bad, rice is really bad, and any type of bread/pasta is the WORST. I feel like I live off salads, but I don't usually have issues with raw veggies, so that's what I like.

Does anybody else have this issue with bread/carbs? Sometimes I really would love a bite of a hot dinner roll or a little sliver of my husbands delicious homemade chicken and dumplings.

I'm ok with most carbs. Once in a blue moon, when I go to Olive Garden, I pull the "guts" (doughy part) of a breadstick out and eat the outsides. It's almost like having the whole thing. It seems like a lot of people can't tolerate those kind of carbs. Your band may settle down. Maybe you won't be like that forever.

I was trying to make a high Protein Breakfast the other day that might hold me over longer on the days I work. It was 1 egg, deli meat, and Swiss on the Pepperidge Farms super thin bread. I even toasted the bread. It did not go down very well. Could have been that it was the morning but I've noticed that most bread doesn't go down well. Rice I'm ok with and I haven't tried Pasta. Oh well, I can live without bread.

I heated up some homemade Soup from the freezer -- label read chicken sausage and white bean soup. Well it had rice in it, too. I haven't been eating rice but thought I'd give it a try. I could tell just from putting a bit in my mouth that my body was saying no, so no soup for me. It's like my body is talking to me and -- lo and behold -- I was listening! Rice cakes are fine -- not sure why. I had some hummus for lunch. Boy does that have a lot of calories.

I have notice people that eat bread and steak in this group. My Doc & Nut stress no bread or heavy steak.Says the bread will blow up in the band and get stuck. Only 2 1/2 months out and have no desire to try it.

My doc said I can eat whatever I can tolerate...so far that has been everything except triscuits make me feel uncomfortable. I dont love steak so no great desire there but there is nothing off limits for me.

Every doc is different which is why you will probably read so many time to follow YOUR doctors rules and regs.

I can eat bread and Pasta and rice in small portions with no problem. It's best to stay away from large amounts of these carbs because even if it goes down ok...it defeats the whole purpose. Just like every doctor is different every person is also. My doctor says fine out what works best for you. I was banded 12-12-13 and I'm down 25lbs but I am also very active :)

I don't quite get the symptoms you have described but carbs do make me gain weight. So I limit them in my diet but do eat them from time to time.

I've found any kind of bread to be a problem for me, so I've stayed away from it.

The only foods off limits to me are ones I can't tolerate. So far okra. I admit there are a few I haven't gotten the nerve up to try

You can make a really low-fat/no-fat hummus easily...just swirl (mix, blend, food process) garbanzo Beans, lemon juice, 1 clove raw garlic, salt, 1 tbsp olive oil and nonfat plain yogurt. You can add one tbsp tahini, or, lacking that, Peanut Butter. Seriously, peanut butter will taste like the tahini.

I was banned 8/27/13 and I'm down 35lbs. It's has been a rough journey for me. The last fill I had last month it was 5 days later before I could tolerate anything including liquid. I go back tomorrow and I'm seriously thinking of asking my doc to talk some Fluid out if my band. I have some good days but most are not so good.

Trying to stay encourage and motivated

I was banded the week before you, 8/22/13. It's very much a learning experience.... These first few months. The way I see it, you've lost 35 in five months and THROUGHOUT THE TWO MONTH HOLIDAY SEASON. I think bravo!!!!!

Keep in touch!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
