Hello. I had my surgery on Tuesday. When they weighed me after surgery in the hospital I gained 5 pounds. I chalked it up to bloating and tried not to let it get to me. I weighed myself today and I still weigh the same amount. 5 lbs more than the morning of my surgery. Is that normal 5 days out??? Please be honest with me.

When I came home from the hospital and weighed myself 4 days after surgery I was 24lbs. Heavier... Yes you read that correctly 24lbs!!!! It took a few weeks for it to come off. My surgeon said it was excess Fluid and gas and that it was very normal after major surgery... Don't despair... It's very normal and 5lbs. is nothing to worry about!

yes..your question is a little scary to me...Your focusing on the wrong thing. Forget the scale. Time for you to heal and get started on your food phases..and getting on with your journey to becoming successful. Detach from the scale. You will lose in time, its what this surgery does.

It will start coming off. I can understand the aggravation. The pounds will start rolling off before you know it. : )

My surgery was 2 weeks ago. I came home 8 pounds heavier than the day of surgery. It took a few days for it to start coming off.

I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Thank you for your responses. I guess I had hoped to hear others had gained. Not to wish ill will on anyone but hoping it was normal. I am a little nervous about failing. I had the band in '07 and people always said didn't you have weight loss surgery? So many comments. It took me 7 years to lose 50 lbs and most of that weight came off in the last year. I was saving all my calories for night time in the hopes I could control myself by putting off food. The band being tight in the morning and day just helped me in my habit as I couldn't eat anyway until nighttime. It was only until I added a Protein Shake in the am that I started losing weight. I had already started my Quest for bypass surgery at this time. I fear now I will not lose much as my portion sizes have already been reduced drastically over the years. I won't obsess or over focus on this too much but I'd be lying if I didn't admit it was there lingering in the back of my mind. I haven't told many people at all about my surgery because I live in a small town and don't need gawkers, watchers, and comments. I know someone who had surgery and the comments were appalling. She looks gross, she's too thin on and on. So sad. Thanks for reading.

I didn't weigh until my two weeks post appt's w/ the dietician & nurse prac. They give you alotta fluids in the hosp so dont sweat it. I'm three weeks out I have lost 20lbs but everyone is different so keep that in mind. Personally I'm only going to be weighing once a month, I've never been one to pay alot of attention to the scale and plus for me frequent weighing is to much of a head trip. Not gonna put myself thru it. I would pay more attention to my nutrition than the scale. Hope this helps

Perfectly normal! I was afraid that I wasn't going to loose but it was just fluids and the gas. I only weigh 1 time a week now and log the number just to look back on for motivation.

Great start Fergie..that is a wonderful habit to get into. When I get sideways, and prob will forever..lol..I do look back at my logs..If what Im doing in the present isn't working, I can look to the past. I promise you, logging is a most efficient way to get back on track. Great luck to you all, keep posting, the help is here if you become unsure about something.

Thank you lee, fergie and dee. It is a mind trip. I certainly don't need to make matters worse. I usually focused more on how my clothes fit anyway. Thanks for your fab feedback!!!!!! What a wonderful place for the good, the bad and everything in between. Whether it's a good day or a tough one it's nice to have a place to talk it out.

@ meintraining.... It very normal to have those fears! I had those fears! I think lots of people do! I totally freaked with those 24lbs of Fluid and I always thought I was a slow looser!! Now 11 months later going from 234-113 I can attest that even slow and steady will win the race.. I believe that if you follow your dr.s plan you WILL succeed with gastric bypass!!!

I gained 11 pounds from IV fluids on surgery day. It took a week to get back down to my pre-surgery weight. I was dismayed, but not surprised. I did a lot of reading here pre-op and knew what to expect. Relax, you're on your way to a smaller, healthier you! :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
