What to bring to the hospital

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am having my surgery on the 25th of this month and want to know what everyone brought to the hospital with them. Just trying to get everything in order before the big day!

Frankly, the only thing I needed was my phone, charger and chap stick. Everything else was a waste of time to bring.

You don't need much. The few things already mentioned are good. I also brought a bathrobe so I didn't flash anyone while walking the halls, a good book to read, and my own pillow. The pillow did double duty - I sleep better with my own and on the ride home it protected my midsection from the seatbelt. Everything else I brought just stayed in my bag. :-)

I wore the hospital gowns and socks to walk the halls. My packed bag stayed packed in the car. I only sent my hubby after my Chapstick and hairbrush. I packed my ipad, phone, chargers and an extension cord in a small bag. These are the items I used the most.

The hospital had Shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste and body wash so I used them. I also brought an extra pillow but my hubby used it to sleep with when he stayed with me. The hospital gave me a small pillow for the ride home and I definitely used it.

Definitely ChapStick! I brought a comfy pair of my own pj's and a light robe. sugar free cough drops in case your throat hurts. I just lived on ice chips for that. I slept all the time so never took out my iPad or anything.

As far as after recomednations:

Gas X and baby Mylacon drops saved me the past few days

sugar free Popsicles

Decaf tea

The only things I used was clothes, cell charger, pads, and crossword puzzles. I didn't even use the Chapstick.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
