What should i pack for surgery?

Recommended Posts

I am having surgery in another city this coming Tuesday and will stay overnight at a hospital and then have 5 days to do nothing but recover at a hotel. The next week I'm attending a work conference in the same city at a nice hotel/resort. It will be good for my recovery as I'll be sitting in on talks and such (better than my normal active daily work activities).

What should I bring for this trip? food wise and not. I'm going to bring Protein Powder for sure as I'm worried about my access to the right types of food post op. My dr doesn't require a pre op diet except for the 1 day prior. Any help is appreciated!

You will be put on a clear liquid diet for a time period determined by your Doctor so your diet will be simple.

In regards to clothing make sure that you yield to comfort rather than fashion. You do not want to do or wear anything that will make your experience any harder or complicated than it needs to be.

This procedures are very unique to the person and while some experience very little discomfort it can vary on a personal basis.

Best of luck to you and welcome to a new phase in your life. It is well worth it.

Bring both comfortable clothes, bathrobe, pajamas and underwear. A lot of people stick with sweats and slippers, or flipflops as you don't want to have to exert too much energy getting dressed. I agree about the Clear Liquids that lbktxgal mentioned above. Best wishes on your surgery and recovery.

Of Water. I tried the unflavored Protein but it taste horrible with Jello and broth. I would rather Drink the water down Kool aid. Sorry for the 3 post I kept hitting send instead of the arrow . Have a good day!;)

everyone has great advice. Protein drinks, Water and lots of it. broth, if you don't like the taste of regular broth than may i suggest the little packages of Soup in like ramen noodles. its a little waste of money but i think they taste much better. save the noodles for when you are on mushies. make sure you have pain medication and a heating pad. the ice packs you can snap for incisional pain. also some ppl are having trouble with ports moving so perhaps a back brace turned around to hold your abd. in place. might make sitting a bit more comfortable. and please rest. a friend of mine at a hotel said that they have recliners available for those that ask. it might be a idea to just see if they have one. and bring your comfy clothes and blanket to snuggle in. perhaps a few dvd's. you might find it helpful to bring a sports cup to shake your Protein Drinks in. walking is good but when you check in ask for a room nearer the elevators so you don't have to hike to them. good luck and enjoy yourself

I am more then sure you will be on Clear Liquids for the two weeks at least one. I would just plan on having plenty of liquids with you. If you are staying in a hotel they probably will only have a small fridge and maybe a microwave.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
