Lap band and cold weather

Recommended Posts

Has anybody had this happen or am I just crazy. For the last four days I have had trouble eating and keeping food down, but the temp have been anywhere from 1 to 20 degrees. Today the temp is 38 degrees and I haven't had one stuck episode today, except for a little sliming this morning when it was still in the teen's. Does the extreme cold weather affect your band?

I live in So. California, so I've never experienced this. However, I do hear many say that they start their day with something hot; coffee, tea, etc., to loosen the band. Don't know if that helps, but thought I'd mention it.

I think the barometric pressure is more responsible for slight band tightness and loosenings than the actual temperature. Flying is a good example. Pressurized cabins can cause many folks to tighten up. I live in Colorado and I've also heard of people going to higher altitudes where the air is thinner and this seems to wreak havoc with some bands?

I don't think there are any scientific studies to back up my assertions but anecdotally, it's accurate.

And it does seem like here in the States, I read about more people complaining of tightness when they go outside during the summer on very hot summer days and experience extra tightness. So, higher temps seem to also be a culprit.

The fact is, eating too much salt or illnesses like colds, flu or low grade infections can cause the body to retain fluids which also causes tightness.

I noticed the extreme cold reeking havoc on my band - had an aggressive fill back in early December, felt great for 2 weeks & then the extreme cold hit. Hurt to eat almost anything, warmer days were better. Decided to have a slight unfill (removed 0.5), now wondering if I removed too much. I will wait 4 weeks, and then maybe ask for .25 to be put back in.

Extreme cold or heat would have to change your body's core temperature...and that's not going to happen...if it does....then....

I am glad to hear that other people have experienced this. I always drink something hot in the morning to loosen the band up but for some reason for the last 4 days it was as tight as could be. I was about to go and get a slight unfil... But today I am doing good today since it warmed up some.

I have to honestly say that I believe so. It's not as cold here in Texas as it is where you are, but it's colder than normal and I have noticed for about two to three weeks now that I've been a bit tighter than usual. I do drink coffee before having anything to eat including my Protein shakes because they are cold from the ice and almond milk I mix it with. After an hour or so (midmorning), I'm okay.

Stress and flying does this for me, maybe Fluid retention is the culprit !

I flew from UK to Austria for a ski holiday. For the first 3 days of the holiday I was unable to eat very much at all. When I could, I had very little interest in eating. I thought to myself 'this must be how the band should feel when it is properly adjusted' I was banded Sept 2013. I am currently at a 6mil fill and going for another fill next week. I am convinced it was the altitude that caused the band to tighten. I have not lost any weight since the first month at all. Maybe with the next fill I can work with the band. Maybe the high altitude feeling is what it should feel like? For now, it's all I have to go on.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
