Should I be concerned about calories this early?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I was sleeved on Monday (Jan 27th). Unlike many folks, I am not having difficutly getting 64oz of Water in per day. I feel like I drink so much water, I might as well just set the tv up in the bathroom to keep from having to get up and down so much! LOL Anyway, my diet guidelines for the first week indicate 60-70g of Protein daily. I can do that with 1 scoop of Isopure and 6 oz of milk, twice daily. That is only about 350 cals. Is that ok or should I be eating more? I am not hungry (I do have some stomach acid action that makes me think I am hungry, but I know better and I have a sh*t- ton of head hunger).

My NUT sent me home with guidelines that show 3 "meals" plus 2 protein supplements per day---just seems like an awful lot more than I need. An example:

B- 1/2 c. very thin cream of wheat with skim milk

S- protein supplement

L- 1 c blended and strained low fat cream Soup

S- protein supplement

D- 1 c blended and strained low fat broth-based soup

IDK but that seems like an awful lot..... anyway, would love to know your thoughts. TIA.

You can actually eat all that? I could barely get in a little bit of Protein Shake. I struggled with getting in my Water too. But overall, you are doing ok. Keep following your docs and nut directions. CONGRATS!

Funny thing. I lost alot the first week and then in week two I stalled. I ate less, (400cal.) drank more, added more Protein and the scale didn't budge. I read stuff on here and some said eat more calories. Sounded unlikely, but I was discouraged anyway. So I had to work hard to eat more than twice the calories, logged in with fitness pal and noticed how with my biking and walking I was still only netting about 800 a day even with eating so much. Low and behold, instead of gaining like I thought, the scale went down. Go figure. Something to do with starvation mode when you eat too little.

Who would have thought I'd actually have to work at eating MORE to lose more. Whatever the reasoning, I'm gonna follow more of what is suggested and less of what I think should work. I don't know why I'm surprised.....my way of eating never worked for me before, so I will be relearning everything since WLS,

I'd just work to eat what the NUT tells you to eat. You may not want the food, but you will find that after a while, no more than 350 cal. will leave you feeling weak and fatigued. Best of luck!

The only reason I track everything is to diagnose if I run into issues. Up to you though. If you can allow yourself an 8 week stall without going batshit crazy I wouldn't bother tracking. me however, well, umm, me batshit crazy when I stop losing for an extended length of time. :D

Not a bad non-scientific why calories in/calories out might be flawed but a decent read on the topic.

Freeky takeaways...

Exercise may stimulate appetite and cause us to eat more.

Fat people are super good at storing fat (duh, right).

What if a hormone imbalance is the real culprit?

Why is it that malnourished kids still grow?

At week three my NUT told me not to worry about calories - focus on the Protein and fluids.

What you list doesn't look like a lot - you'll be able to take in more Soup and thinned oatmeal; it will pass thru fairly quickly. Once you move to a puree diet, you probably won't be able to take in 1/2 cup, more like 1/4 cup or something like that.

My guidelines for wk 1 was just clear liquids- I think on a good day I got in 80 calories. Wk2-3 was full liquids and I just drank 1 Protein shake a day, like you are doing. I think i stayed around 400 calories until wk 5. When I started mushy foods I increase my calories to 600-800. Wk 7 when I started eating real foods I increase by calories to 600-900. Which is were I am trying to keep them until I am in my normal body weight range, that is when I am going to increase them to 900-1100.

I called my Nut and she said I should be having more than just Protein shakes-- it is impt for my body to get nutrients from other things (like blended/strained soups) throughout the day. Thanks for all of the responses. :)

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
