How many calories?

Recommended Posts

I am almost 9 months out and my weight loss has been stalled for about a month. I'm about 20 lbs from my goal and have already lost 103 lbs. I have been staying between 600-800 calories a day but my nutritionist said to increase it to around 1000. That has been hard for me. For one I find it physically hard to get that much food in. Two I'm so afraid of eating that much for fear of gaining weight. I'm not sure what the right amount is. Any advice/suggestions are welcome!

Congrats on losing so much in 7 months!! Well done! Your body is probably just trying to get its bearings. Maybe you can try 1,000 just for 1 day to ignite your metabolism. Also, I notice the more Water I manage to drink the more weight I lose.

Since I'm new at this - only 1 month post op - can you give me an idea of how many calories you were eating at 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, etc?

In the beginning, probably the first 4 months or so I don't think I ever went above 600. I can't be that restrictive anymore. If I go below 500 for more than a day or so I'm weak and light headed

Mandy. My goodness how did you survive off if that little calories? What were you eating exactly. I've gained 40lbs because I went bizerk on what I was eating. I'm back to fluids and now trying to lose weight again. So what were you consuming?

I couldn't physically consume anymore. But that's the point of surgery. I'm definitely able to eat a little more now but I'm desperately afraid of gaining weight back. I pretty much only eat high Protein foods now and in the beginning. eggs, chicken, fish, turkey, low fat cheese, Protein Shakes and some fruits and veggies.

I think you should follow your nuts advice. Your body needs fuel. I am almost 10 weeks out and eating about 800 calories. I was told that I should be at about 1000 calories after 3 months. I know all nuts are different, though. Maybe add in some Peanut Butter or nuts or healthy fats from avocado, Are you eating fruits and veggies? Are you meeting your Protein goals?

I do eat fruits and veggies. I snack on carrots and apples. When I eat lower calories I usually get about 60-70 grams of Protein. When I've been upping my calories like the nut suggested I've been aiming for 90+ grams of protein. I just feel like I'm constantly eating when I aim to eat 1000 calories and that is hard for me physically and mentally.

I'm 7 months out and I've lost 75lbs. I've been stuck at 200lbs for the last month. Reading this I see that I need to increase my protein to 80 I've only been getting in about 60 and consuming 800-1000 calories. I'm going to try to drink more Water too. Right now I'm only drinking about 64ozs.

Two weeks Ago I started working out 4-5 days a week for two hours. I'm hoping by incorporating the changes I can get to my goal by August which will be my 1 year surgery anniversary.

Any other suggestions

You might try mixing up the makeup of your calories. I'm trying to get the last 20 lbs off, too, and I'm trying very low carb (20g a day) with 900 calories. My fat is high (50%) and Protein is around 90 g. It's hard to do at first, I keep going over on carbs and not getting in enough fats. I have had progress, though.

There is substantial research on this type of diet and the idea that a calorie is a calorie is being challenged. In some studies, people lost weight and/or inches on relatively high calorie diets when the fats were high and the carbs were very low. Just something to think about.

Did your nut give you your BMR? That's your basal metabolic rate. I'm sure it is well above 1000 calories, unless you are bedridden or older, so it's really unlikely you would gain weight trying that out.

Good luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
