Few choices for protein shakes for pre-op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

I met with the nutritionist from my surgeon's hospital group this morning. While she didn't really give me any earthshattering news that I didn't already know, she did give me a huge binder of information re the before surgery liquid diet and all of the phases of the post surgery diet. It is very information and very detailed.

I was surprised to find that there were only five types of acceptable Protein Shakes listed for the before surgery liquid diet:

Myoplex Lite

Ensure High Protein

Slim Fast High Protein

Ketogenix (BariatricAdvantage)

and one other that I had not heard of before that is apparently only available online.

What struck me about the Slim Fast High Protein is that it really isn't THAT high protein--it's only 7 grams. It's 15 once milk is added.

I have already been supplementing my protein as part of my MSWL and getting the 70-80 grams of protein requirement in, using Syntrax Nectar and Syntrax Matrix. The NUT said that Syntrax nectar would be good to use AFTER surgery, but that it can't be used for the pre-surgery diet due to the fact that it is too low in carbs. She said she would not recommend the Matrix protein at all because it is a protein blend and not just whey protein isolate or concentrate.

I am obviously going to follow my NUT's advice, but I was just curious as to whether others had these kind of limitations with the pre-surgery diet.

Interesting...

Why does your NUT think a low carb diet is bad before surgery?

My original although, more extensive than yours, did not have any that did not contain splenda or artificial sweetners. I contacted my nutritionist with some other options and she gave me the ok for other options as long as they conformed to certain perameters. Do you think yours might be willing to work with you on that?

I swear I don't think any single surgeon has the same pre-op requirements. I met with mine yesterday and I'm only allowed to use Celebrate or Unjury during the pre-op diet. But then I see other people can use whatever kind they want or have a totally different list. I'm sure they all have their reasons but you would think they would have some kind of standard protocal.

I used the Slim Fast pre-made stuff, low carb...it was good and filling... my dr gave me options based on the Protein grams and carbs... even tho the book I got mentioned several brands that they recommend

Those same drinks were listed on my surgeon's pre-op diet, but he said I could go with Premier Protein.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
