Post-op Pain Control? IV Tylenol? Not convinced.

Recommended Posts

I was also given "tylenol" in my IV every 4 hours, but it wasn't tylenol. I can't remember the name but nurse said it was "liquid tylenol" It was very effective. At home I took Hydrocodone for one day, then crushed tylenol after. Pain wasn't really an issue at all, I was just tender. I think the Tylenol helped much more with the inflammation.

Hey there! Dr. Caruana did my surgery 6 weeks ago and I was ordered the standard IV Dilaudid (and I told them to DC it because I didn't need it), then they gave me Tramadol (I stopped that too) and never any mention of the IV Tylenol... maybe this is something new that Dr. C is doing?

Anyway it's good to hear your time is coming very soon. Let me just tell you that Dr. C is a master of his craft! Don't worry about anything! If you'll be at Sister's they will take great care of you. Best hospital experience ever (and I've had a few, lol)! I had zero problems, no pain (really!) and I really have to look hard now to see where my incisions were because he knows the best places to cut! Each cut except two are only about 1/4 inch, the others just short of an inch. I needed no pain meds after I got home.

The only thing to watch is when you have your leak test. The contrast Fluid might make you bloated with more gas and give you the runs for a day or two. That's really the only issue I had, it wasn't pretty but once that cleared up I was totally fine. Second day I was home I was doing normal things, cooking, etc.

Best decision of my life and no regrets! Feel free to message me if you want to know anything else!! Good luck my fellow Buffalo Gal :)

PS: Ask for pictures!! It's the coolest thing! Dr. C will gladly oblige and print some for you!

My surgeon said I will be getting IV Acetaminophen(Ofirmev). My friend who is an anesthesiologist said it is very effective but hell...he didn't have gastric surgery. I want to know from experience. Who has had it and does it really work... this "IV Tylenol"?? Thanks is advance.

Hello there!! I love my Queen City neighbors! Dr. Caruana did a few ppl I know. He is the best. Well he hasn't been doing the lap VSG's as long as the bypass but I still have all my faith in him. He no longer operates out of Sisters. He is exclusively at ECMC now. They built him his own OR suites and the recovery unit is like a resort! It is gorgeous. All private rooms and brand spanking new. I will keep you posted. Not sure I want pics even as a nurse I don't think I want to see my insides gutted. AHAHHAHHAAA. How much have you lost?

I had a morphine pump at the hospital and liquid hydrocodone at home.

Same here. I only took the hydrocodone for 1 day at home, my pain was not that bad.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
