Revision to DS, what insurances require less than six mos. weight management?

Recommended Posts

I'm in NYC, 39 BMI no serious comorbidities ,and I want a revision to the duodenal switch. My insurance requires six months again however I'm uncertain if they will cover it I spoke to someone on the phone and requested the written info regarding the revision. It seems unless there is something wrong they won't cover it according to the woman on the phone.

So I'm going to start the process of testing but still might want to either leave current insurance or get another. I currently have Amerigroup Healthplus. So many questions I have.

What insurances didn't have a wait or only required three/four months of weight management?

Another question is when buying an insurance what is the average cost of the plan? Do you pay per month? If so what's average for an individual insurance. I might consider adding my toddler son to it although he has insurance.

For people who have had the DS I would like to hear from you especially.

What type of procedure do you currently have and why do you want to change to a DS? I would make sure to research all the details before changing. I'm not sure, does the DS have problem with nutrient absorption? Sorry I don't have any insurance detail for you. I was a self pay that went to Mexico for the VSG. Good luck.

I'm converting from Lap Band to Sleeve. Submitted through Health Net PPO. Nothing is wrong with my band, just not working. They just needed it documented that I failed to lose the weight within 2 years.

So how did you prove that? food journal? Did you use the fact you had a previous surgery as proof? Other poster I had the sleeve.

Since I have the band, I have followed up with my surgeon every year for adjustments so he wrote the insurance a letter of medical necessity

When I was researching I found that most insurances didn't cover the DS at all. I ended up getting the sleeve which was my first choice anyways, the malabsorption of bypass and DS freaks me out a bit. Can I ask what problems you have with the sleeve that you're wanting a conversion? Always good to hear the positive and negative stories.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
