How soon did you drive after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I was wondering how soon you guys drove after surgery. My husband commutes to NYC by train and I drop him off and pick him up at the train station. I'm really hoping that I'll be able to drive once I have the surgery because if not, my husband will have to take the bus back and forth to the train station which will make his workday a lot longer. Any feedback would be appreciated.

The only reason not to drive is if you are on narcotic pain meds.

1 week to the day - I drove myself to my one week followup. It was more an issue of being off the liquid hydrocodone for 24 hours than anything else.

If you were driving him back and forth, then you used a car. So not being able to drive.......wouldn't it be reasonable to assume you don't need the car your're using to drive him to the station. Let him drive himself and leave it at the station.

Just bustin your chops......far as I know narcotics (pain meds) is the only restriction. I drove home from the hospital.

I waited 4 days & was not on pain meds. Surgery was on a Thursday & I drove on a Monday. I did have a small laptop pillow on my lap between the seatbelt & my tummy... The only concern about driving, besides not being on pain meds, is turning the wheel to the right or left. Sometimes that gets a bit sore, not bad, just a little sore.

Yeah, I didn't think of that...d'oh! The only issue is that the station's parking garage costs an arm and a leg. But if I'm not feeling up to driving it's an option.

I drove 6 days later, but I wasn't on any pain medication and it was only short trips, ie: no more than 15mins away.

On the third day after surgery I traveled back from Mexico, walked through the entirety of a large airport, dealt with luggage, walked a long walk to my car, and then drove 30 minutes home. I was fine.

I had my surgery on 1/16 and was out shopping and running errands on 1/20 (much to my surprise). On 1/21 I went back to work. Yes, you'll be very tired after exerting yourself but if you are NOT on pain meds (narcotics) you should be fine. My last pain med was given on 1/18 and then I had some liquid tylenol but that is it.

My doc said I could drive 48 hours after being off anesthesia and narcotics. I didn't really need to, though, so it was more like five days.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
