Good morning everyone,

I've been reading posts for about a week now and I thought it would be best to introduce myself as this seems to be a group made up of new friends. I'm Tanya, I'm 40 years old. Single mother of a 7 year old daughter living in Eastern Canada. I am pre-op. Just waiting on that call from the Surgeon with a date. I was told I'll be going sometime in the next 4-6 weeks. I'm very anxious. Like so many, I have always been overweight. But as an adult, I've really let my weight dictate my life. I'm very successful professionally but basically have no life socially. I don't go out, I don't hang with friends. I stay home and eat. I'm an emotional eater. My body has me trapped. It's taken me a long time to finally decide this was my best option for success and a happy life. I'm all my daughter has so I have to do whatever I can to live a long healthy lifestyle.

My biggest fear in this surgery is the post-op struggle i see so many having as well as the head hunger. I'm doing everything I can now to try to change my thinking about eating because it really affects my everything.

I think this place is going to be my new virtual home as I do live in a very small town with no support groups available.

Thanks everyone for reading!

Tanya

Welcome aboard! It sounds like you know why you overeat and are addressing it before you get your surgery. I think that will help you post op. If anything you can come here and look up answers to questions or ask the experts :) I am also still preop but coming here has helped me along far more than I could have asked for. Best of luck to you.

Welcome and congratulations...this is a wonderful tool, you (we) have to make it work for us; as you know, it's not a miracle cure, you still have to put forth an effort... I am at a stall, but I'm not gaining... I have head hunger, and try to ignore it, or I drink something hot (decaf tea, Unjury chicken broth) and that seems to help get over it... good luck to you; we are all "in it to win it"... !!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
