When should I tell my parents?

Recommended Posts

I'm due to get banded this Wednesday. So far, I have only told a handful of close friends but no family.

I don't live close to my parents. They are in Scotland and I live in England. I am however still close to them, my mother in particular.

I chose not to tell my parents, mainly because I was concerned that they would worry too much. My parents support me in everything I do and I know that they would not argue with me about it. My mum though, would privately worry and I wanted to spare her that.

Anyway, now it nearly time for the op and I;m not sure wether to tell them just before or just after the op.

What is your experience regarding telling parents and family and how did they react?

Dave xx

I didn't have to worry about telling or not telling...I just told everyone and it made a world of difference as far as support and did I need it...If I were you and to spare your mom from worrying with surgery tell her after but I think since you are close your parents, their support would really help with recovery and beginning of new life....Good Luck

Personally...if you're close to them, especially your mum....then you should tell her, because she'll be hurt when she finds out otherwise. Secondly...what if, GOD FORBID, you are seriously hurt/die. Surgery is surgery...no matter how "less invasive" it may be and I would not want the last thing my parents thought was that she was too scared, etc. to tell us.

Sorry for the abruptness of this, but they are your parents....and you say you love them....let them know.

Just my 2cents :girl_hug:

Personally I would tell her.

She will surely be supportive and most likely be happy and proud that you are being pro-active and making a decision towards better health.

My parents are very supportive - they have worried a lot about my weight and all the potential health risks associated with obesity. They agree that this decision is a good one. That means a lot to me.

Best of Luck to you! :gluck:

Hi Everyone,

I've decided to tell my parents the night before the operation. That will be this Tuesday.

I'm sure my mum will be fine about it.

As a "mum", I'd be mighty upset if one of my sons had any type of surgery and didn't tell me. That's my job as a mom....to worry.

I wish you the best, I think you've made a wise choice to tell mum, especially if you want to stay in the will, lol.

Update!

Ok, I told my Mum last night. At first she was very concerned and asked me not to do it. This her initial reaction though and after we had a long chat, she was 100% on my side. She told me she was proud that I was making a positive move.

Anyway, I travelled from London to Belgium this morning and spent the afternoon in the hospital, filling forms, having nutritional advice, blood tests and meeting the lovely Dr Dillemans. It all went ever so well. The Doc really put my mind at ease.

I'm about to go out for my 'Last Supper', then an early night as I am due at the hospital first thing in the morning.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
