Gallbladder

Recommended Posts

How many of you had your gallbladder removed during surgery. I had an u/s done last week and all looks fine with my gallbladder so we are keeping it in. I'm new to the bypass world (was supposed to have a sleeve done on Tuesday and it got canceled last minute and now moved to bypass 2/3) and wonder what others did.

Thanks

Rapid weight loss creates gall stones and removing the gall bladder prevents a further surgery. 25 yrs ago I lost a lot of weight in Jenny Craig and ended up having the surgery. Nutrisystem's and JC got sued at that time for not advising clients that of that potential. So having the gall bladder during the surgery is very common.

My sister's surgeon removed her gallbladder at the same time he did her gastric bypass. My surgeon didn't give me that option and I didn't think to ask. He did prescribe me Actigall. I am to take it for one year to prevent gallstones.

Mine was removed six months after my bypass. I knew I had gallstones for quite sometime but never had any symptoms until about ten months before my bypass surgery. I had a pretty severe attack that sent me to the ER. Still I put off removing it but I knew I needed to eventually. It was like a ticking time bomb. My surgeon wouldn't do two procedures at the same time because he said it drastically increases complication risks. So I waited until I had lost most of my weight and had it out in December. It was a much more painful procedure than the RNY surgery. My bypass was almost painless by comparison.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
