My 600 pound life

Recommended Posts

WOW, thank you all for the information... this sounds like a "must see" for people with WLS to be aware of the pitfalls as well as the successes... on one hand the series was sounding so depressing; so glad they have some positive results on there too!!! I hate reality shows, people are so mean to each other; but this one sounds like something that would be good to watch to keep myself in check!! Thanks!

My god, she is now claiming that they purposely edited the show to make it look like she didn't lose any weight.

I watched that episode in utter amazement as well..I'm 3 weeks out from surgery.what I'm really confused by is how she was eating all that food? ?im a big guy and loved food...but I can barely eat a cup of anything.im on purée sand it's a bit rough.how was she not throwing up?did she just stretch the sleeve very quickly ?its really crazy.so very upsetting and sad especially for the child.

Are any of these shows going to be replayed? I don't have a DVR and don't watch much TV, but I'd really like to see this series.

A year or two ago they had another "600 Pound LIfe" series where they followed 4 WLS patients for seven years. The story of Melissa Morris was especially inspirational--I think she lost around 500 pounds after surgery! The episodes used to be on YouTube but they took them down.

TLC also had a show called "600 Pound Mom" that featured Dominique Lanoise, who was 600 pounds and needed to lose 100 pounds before they would do surgery on her (this wasn't at the TX hospital, she was in FL). She was another one who made excuses for her condition when all she wanted to do was eat and get her daughters to wait on her hand and foot. She was also on a doctor-monitored weight loss program where everything was done for her--including having the food delivered to her home. She lied to her doctor that she was being compliant with the diet when she actually wasn't and the surgery had to be postponed, but she died before she could get the operation. I think you can find that show on YouTube.

There are a lot who are successful and it is very inspiring to watch. I think it is Olivia who was so successful and had a large tumor removed, she definitely is living a new life!

My husband found the one on Penney and is taping it...but is this some kind of series? Seems like someone decided to do "reality" on WLS...but where are all the PRO people...the people that did what they were told and blossomed??? Not as big of a story, huh?

After reading this, I had to watch the show. I have been meaning to watch the series, I hear it's definitely an eye opener. My thoughts reflect many of yours, I was shocked, disappointed and sick due to the show. It was heartbreaking to see someone waste such a golden opportunity. It was a wonder her son was not overweight already, as the whole family has a major problem. It really does reinforce the statement if you don't want to change, and aren't willing to work for it, no one can want it or do it for you. If it did anything for me, it made my convictions of hard work and accountability that much stronger for myself in this journey. I am happy and blessed for all of you who are paving the way for me and showing me what can be accomplished. I pray that one day penny will get it, and others like her will want to live more than they want to eat.

Watched Penny's episode was so sad. Just watched Zsalynn's episode and she dropped over 200 lbs in the 12 months with a verbally abusive jerk husband sabotaging her the whole way. Zsalynn said she would do something about that but could only manage 1 hard thing at a time. I hope she went on to lose another 100 lbs and divorced that creep! He was even verbally abusing their 8 year old daughter when she stood up for her Mom.

I don't know how to respond to someone individually or add their comments to mine; however, the show about Penney is on again next week on TLC for those of you that want to see it... I have it set up to tape ALL of them on my dvr now... I was not aware that this is what that was... like I said previously...when I'm feeling sorry for myself (ie now on a stall) I can watch that and get inspired by what NOT to do...

I was upset with her as well. Her story is now embedded in my mind it haunts me. But I choose to learn from her failed journey knowing that this sleeve surgery is a tool and I must continue to eat clean and healthy and walk and workout to achieve my goals, or I can find myself in her place. She desperately needed months of behavioral therapy and dietician appts before having the surgery. Her husband as well. He is illiterate to eating healthy and the dos and donts of Weightloss surgery . He's helping kill her, and I think they're in denial.

there must be very "special" dynamics in a person's life that allows them to reach 600 pounds... not just severe food addiction with entrenched denial, but an extensive system of enablers. having worked in addiction counseling, esp working with families for many years... this isnt going to change overnight or at all without really extensive counseling and each enabler having their own recovery program.

my husband's stepdad is a food addict. not 600 pounds by any stretch of the imagination... but his addictive nature of eating, omg! despite advanced liver disease, cancer treatment and high blood pressure, i have never seen him change his eating habits. but why should he when my MIL gives him whatever he demands? he wants a pizza or huge fish fry when his liver enzymes are sky high? she runs right out and gets it. doc says low fat food to rest the liver? nope, she runs off to get him ribs and cheese dip at the store... not saying its her fault he's food addicted, but until she learns to not enable him, his incentive to change remains low. the family is a system and while one can change without the rest, its really really hard, nearly impossible. when my FIL dies, my MIL might look at her codependent behavior, but probably not. the worst thing is, she has chronic autoimmune disorder that causes her lots of pain when she eats poorly. so she is in pain every day because of her inability to say no. she is as ill as he is, maybe more so.

wow, that's a shame, Moonlight...my Mom was similiar; my Dad had diabetes, but she still brought him whatever he wanted...the amount of butter that man consumed was UNBELIEVEABLE... we tried to talk with them; and there was no changing their behavior either...

I agree with everyone's comments about this woman. In the beginning I was so hopeful that she would progress enough to at least get out of bed and become mobile. I became angry at her when she made the comment that she thought she was a better mother than most women because she was at home with her child while the rest of us went out and had jobs. She perceived it as quality time with her child. Really? How much quality time can you spend with your child when your big butt is laid up in the bed and the father has to do everything for the child? She is very much delusional. The child is young and loves his mother but in a few short years his social interests will take him outside the home and this woman won't be seeing him... so how much quality time does she think she'll spend with him then? Her husband should be arrested for what he is doing to her. She can not stay that large without him feeding her all that junk. I was shocked that she was able to eat all of those solid foods so quickly after surgery, and the massive amounts of them were unbelievable. My heart breaks for that young boy as his future will be bleak if his dad keeps feeding him the junk I saw in their fridge. Why did this woman even agree to the surgery? I am so angry that it all came so easy to her and I've been jumping through hoops for a long time. Okay... rant over.

I really hope the Dr learned a lesson. He made a huge mistake. Through my journey I have lamented and railed against the requirements because I kept saying "really? Someone is just going to commit to having surgery without knowing what they have to do? Do they think I'm

a stupid child?"

And then I see this. And it makes me realize why they do it but at the same time it pisses me off that people like her make it so hard for those of us with intelligence and knowledge and commitment to get our surgeries.

I really think she had no intention of losing weight. She wanted to be on TV and she enjoys surgeries and doctors and being in the hospital. She likes the attention.

She has a picture of herself on Facebook with her oxygen tubes on. Who does that? I've known people on oxygen and you can take it off for one minute to take your picture. It's like she's proud of it. And she doesn't need it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
