Emotional Eaters.....How are you coping?

Recommended Posts

I am 6 months out from my surgery and realizing that i miss my friend, my comforter....food! I know that I have always been an emotional eater and now that it is nearly impossible for me to turn to food for comfort, I am really strugging emotionally. My PCP has prescribed me and anti-depressant, even though Im not depressed. I have really bad anxiety and it helps with that. Has anyone else found that they are struggling with handling emotions post-surgery??? How are you coping?

I've been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder, so I know how you're feeling. I haven't had my surgery yet and am worrying like crazy about how I'm going to cope. I am a long time binge eater and food addict and I don't know how in the world I'm going to handle things without food.< /p>

The only advice I can give you is stay on your meds if they are helping you. If you're still having issues I'd recommend that you see a psychiatrist instead of a PCP for your mental health concerns. PCP's really don't have the background or training for the more complicated mental health stuff. You may benefit from seeing a specialist.

Have you considered therapy? I know that's a big step but it may help. I have already promised myself that if the emotions get too overwhelming post-surgery that I will see one.

If you need any more motivation, look at your ticker. You have lost ONE HUNDRED POUNDS! You will make it! :)

I still struggle somewhat...I do eat healthy things when I feel like I HAVE to eat...raw almonds, vegetables etc... but something hot to drink always helps too...it slows you down and helps you pass the time...hot tea (decaf) or the Unjury chicken soup...something like that may help...I helps me most of the time

Hi I am a emotional eater :). I don't care what kind of emotion I am going through......right now I can't get anything other than 2 maybe 3oz at a time. Thank you sleeve!!! I drank some orange juice today got so sick, which made me upset because I couldn't drink the orange juice......but that's all I could do was be upset! I eat nothing else!

OOPS! How am I coping? I try to stay busy, I know that sometimes that is so hard to do. I read books, take short walks, I really like to do Beachbody's Shaun T's Hip hop abs, and Rockin Body. I do that for 10-15 mins. I'm to tired to think about eating. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
