First Fill Done

Recommended Posts

Gaffer I can't remember what site I was on but there was a petition that you could add your name to asking for exactly that. They want lap bands covered by OHIP as well as the rny. I think the petition was for Ontario only though. I did sign it. I'm with you on the cause, however, I will probably already self paid waayyyy before then!

I'm with you Andrew! However, I think the healthcare system in this province needs a makeover first. Plus, we need more hospitals! I hear they are going to start work on the south end one soon - finally!!! Even if they approved more lapband surgeries I'm not sure where they would perform them or with what staff as both of these seem to be lacking as well. Just my two cents worth.

PB: "productive burp" -- what happens when something eaten can't go down due to restriction has to come back up

I suggest checking out the Lapband FAQ and references section it will help explain what all the terms are. It helped me a lot when I started checking this site out.

Firstfill down....? more to go.....

It all went well, I guess I already had 2.4 cc in the band so he added 1.6cc for a total of 4cc. It sounds like alot but I don't think I feel anything yet. I was surprised how easy it was for him to find my port. Thats a bonus I guess. Dame J, when did you say your fill was?? And do you have any restriction?? I know it's different for everyone, just curious.

Hey Becca I had my fill a week ago on the 28th. I had restriction for the first day but now nothing. Really there is no difference from before and after. So I am going to be making an appointment today for another fill. Hopefully the second fill will be better.

Hey, to everyone here (especially gaffer since in his post he said he did it). Where do you get analyzed for body fat and such. I really want to detail my experience, i want the whole 9 yards, I want to know once i do this how many inches i lose, and body fat, and BMI and such...

Don't get me wrong, in a case like Me BMI is a good tool for obesity, because i can say i have muscle and all that, but i dont have 150lbs of muscle lol. But i'm not a big fan of weight and BMI. Obviously if i have 180lbs of lean tissue...i could never weigh under 180...so i want a good idea for goal weight and also..i want to know how much FAT i'm losing, not just weight.

I had mine done at my fill Dr. who also runs a weight loss clinic out of his practise. I was not expecting it, they just did it while I was there. I think it is a pretty crude analysis, certianly not as acurate as using a submersion tank, but it was interesting. They use a medical grade tanita(sp?) scale which sends an electric pulse through you to measure the resistance and calculate you body fat, non-fat mass (muscles, bones, internal organs, and you Water mass). As it turns out I have more lean mass than I expected. I was at 47% body fat and the print out said the ideal was 12-25%. According to my calculations if I was to aim for the high end of the range I would weigh 235.

If you want a better one done, phone a good gym an see if they can reccommend a place that does them in the tank. Most kinesiology departments at major universities do them. Maybe start by phoning the gym at you closest university or college. You could also have it done with calipers and most gyms will have some one who should know how to do that.

Andrew

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
