Weight loss questions

Recommended Posts

I have a question. I had surgery Dec 30th 2013 and to date have only lost 18lbs since home from hospital. Everything I am reading states you should lose between 5-20 lbs a week? Is this true? Also I have no energy, how long does it take to start getting energy back?

Beth, congratulations on your recent surgery! You'll be amazed at what this tool can help you accomplish! Now everybody is different and will lose at their own pace. You really shouldn't compare your loss to someone else's as you'll drive yourself crazy! And a lot of it is relative to where you started out in your journey (the heavier people start seem to lose at a faster rate, etc). I can tell you that I NEVER lost 20 lbs in any week. I averaged about 3 -5 lbs a week at the beginning, then came the dreaded "stalls" starting at about 3 weeks out which lasted a week or two at a time (very frustrating) and then they would pass and the scale would start moving again. After the first two months it slowed to about 1 -3 lbs a week. Now at almost 10 months post op it's a lot slower but still going down. As for the energy, make sure you are getting your Protein in (goal 60-80 grams) and also your B12 Vitamin helps with that.

I think 18# in 3 wks is awesome. I have only lost 12 in 2..

I dont see any stats for you such as age or starting weight.

I have NEVER EVER lost weight quickly in a week. At most I lost 4 lbs in a week and I did everything right. However, I was only 199 on the day of my surgery (as opposed to some larger people who lose a lot of weight quickly). I think you sound like you are doing terrific though! I am assuming you had a RNY?

Hi Beth,

I averaged 5 to 7 pounds a week for the first 2 months, now I average 2 to 4 pounds a week. It sounds like you are off to a great start. Stick to your plan, and I am sure you will continue to lose the weight. Don't get discouraged if one week it slows down. It happens. Stay positive. Best of luck!!

Hi Beth, I am losing weight at your pace. I felt like you and thought it was slow. However as long as I am losing I will be happy with that.

hi all I'm 6 days post op and haven't lost a pound. This is so heartbreaking to me. It took a lot for me to get to this point.

Gaskins, that's still early and with all the IV Fluid they pump in you. Be patient.

I considered myself a slower loser in the beginning. Everything I read here indicated that there were many factors in how fast people lose weight :-) age, gender, starting weight, general health and/or existing heath issues, and activity levels, to name a few. I may have felt I was losing slowly but I was losing steadily each week an never stalled. Then suddenly (so it seemed, but it was actually seven months later), I had lost 100 pounds! I still find it hard to believe that the petite and fashionable woman I see in my mirror is ME.

Relax, follow your plan as closely as possible, Celebrate your successes (you work hard for them), and don't compare yourself to others. You are uniquely YOU. And you will get there. :-)

Don't be discouraged. Following my surgery I gained 11 pounds from IV fluids. It took me a whole week just to get back down to the weight I was the morning of my surgery! After that the REAL losing began. :-)

My energy started picking back up 3rd week. I also started light exercise and pushing through the fatigue

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
