Sleep apnea and c-pap machine

Recommended Posts

When did you stop needing to use your c-pap machine? How could you tell? I know you need to have a sleep study to determine if you no longer need a c-pap machine, but I don't want to get one too early.

I have stopped using mine. I got to a point that I just slept better without it. My lung clinic will not do another sleep study until I am 12 months post-op, which won't be until July. I am married and my husband looked for any signs that I still needed it. I no longer snore, I don't wake up gasping for breath. I wake up feeling refreshed. I plan to get a Fit Bit which tracks your sleep, I think that will help as well.

Please take some advice on this. My husband is a yr post, he is in an acceptable size and weight and thinks because he lost weight his sleep apnea is cured. It is not, its better but the fact a person has extra skin inside they throat is still there. He won't use his machine and I'm sleeping in the guest room because of the snoring and gagging he does, so please get your new sleep study done before you discontinue using it

I too have stopped using mine. I kept having to go back to my sleep doctor because I kept waking up with air blowing to strong from the machine. I went in 3 times to have it adjusted down. I also am married and my husband has been watching me and making sure I do not snore or choke anymore. I sleep soundly etc.

I do need to go to the doc again once I am at goal. I believe as Loving Life said that we should get checked again which I am sceduling but I think that in her situation her husband is still snoring and choking which I am not. I don't know about you but I know the differance. When I had it and let's say I fell asleep with out my cpap I would wake up and heart would be racing but not any more I sleep like a baby. :)

I do not plan for my husband to quit the cpap until he is medically authorized. He is breathing normally since his cpap 2 months prior to sleeving 12/2, but he just had to have a new sleep study last week because he is having issues with the oxygen. I used to not be able to sleep in the same bed with him because of horrible sleep apnea. Thank God the sleeve required him to be tested and get the cpap! Lifesaver. I am loving being back in bed with my heart.

My experience is very similar. I will go for the sleep study in July to see what it says. But as long as I am sleeping without any signs of apnea, I am going without. I wake very refreshed every morning, have lots of energy, am never drowsy during the day. My husband reports that he can't even hear me breathing, let alone snoring, and I shook the windows! When I was in for my six month check, my bariatric doc said that if I presented at my current weight, with my current neck size, with a spouse reporting no snoring, they would never have even sent me in for the study. I still have my machine. If I ever feel that I am still experiencing apnea, I would definitely begin to use it again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
