Post Surgery Reflux..How much worse did it get?

Recommended Posts

I have chosen the Sleeve for my surgery but my surgeon is really pushing me to go for a bypass. When I told him that I suffer from acid reflux he REALLY started pushing saying that the reflux would get much worse with the sleeve. How much worse did your reflux get compared to before surgery?

Oh, my goodness. I also had acid reflux so my surgeon did an endoscopy to see if I had a hiatal hernia. It did show that I did have a hiatal hernia so he repaired it at the same time that he did the gastric sleeve. My surgeon recommended the sleeve right from the very beginning and with the repair, I should have no problems with reflux. I would really question your surgeon on this. I have heard of more patients having dumping problems with the bypass.

I agree with Betty. I had terrible reflux, had a hiatal hernia repair during sleeve surgery, and have had only one reflux issue since surgery. But that was my fault as I worked very late one night and ate something as I was crawling into bed. Just tired and not thinking.

The sleeve cured my reflux issues, so ...

I had prior to the sleeve the lap band, I had horrid acid reflux with the band and my surgeon said that the reflux will stick with me for life because of the damage the band did to my stomach. I am on medication for it too this day and I am 9 weeks out of having the revision surgery to the sleeve, I can't go a day without it. Hopefully down the road it will get better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
