If you don't have a leak then your stomach is sealed...However, you need to be careful for another month or so...We heal from the inside out in this one..Although we think otherwise because of our incisions....It takes time for the staples to be enclosed in scar tissue...

So take it easy on the poor little thing and listen to your body when eating....It gives you signs that you are full or satisfied...It always did, we just chose to ignore it....

Is anyone else here taking Carafate Suspension for this???? I have to take it four times a day for three months. Doc said that even though it is intended as an ulcer medication, it is helpful in preventing raw sores along the staple line, and helps the tummy to heal.

maybe if I had been given the med..It might have saved me from a long and painful leak and complications from it!hmmmmmm

Carafate Suspension made me vomit as soon as it went down it came up. I am on Nexium 40 mg powder not the capsule. You mix it with one once of Water wait about a minute and drink. This help the healing, ulcer and acid in my stomach. Ask your doctor about it.

is medication like Carafate Suspension normally given by the doctor after surgery? I have a real acidity stomach, no one says how I am to care for it after surgery.

The Carafate liquid Suspension works for me, but many others use a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) to control GERD. I have Omeprazole capsules on hand from a pre-op gastro situation, but don't normally have to use it in addition to the Carafate. I think I have only used it three times since coming home from the hospital on Christmas day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
