Protein Powder

Recommended Posts

:help: I know that I am not getting enough Protein and was hoping someone could suggest a good Protein Powder as I can not find the one recommended in the pre-op diet seminar. I would prefer an unflavoured one. Which ones are you using?

Thanks

I order unflavored unjury online. A lot of people use that one. I'm not sure how long you've been banded but ultimately I think the goal is to get most of your Protein from solid food like fish and chicken. You may know all this, but the band is most effective when you put solid things in your stomach. That way you can feel full for longer and avoid feeling hungry all the time like you do when you're on a diet.

But anyway, regarding your question, you can boost your Protein with the powders. I think Unjury is probably the favorite around here. Google "unjury" and I'm sure you'll find it.

Good luck

Thanks Marjon, I was also hoping to get some advise on which store to go to buy the Protein. I am just about to start on the pureed portion of the TLBC post-op diet and know that I just will not be able to eat blended meats - its a texture thing. So I am worried about the lack of protein in my diet.

If you want to shop for it in a store I think you should just head to a health food store and as them for suggestions. I'm not sure where you live but if it is a medium sized town or bigger they should have health food stores. If all else fails they probably have something at pharmacies, and possibly Wal Mart. But I would also consider ordering the unjury on line. It only takes a few days to get there.

Do you know if it has that "whey" taste to it? I have trouble getting it down if it does, but I would like to find a good protien powder.

I use the rice based Protein. I mix it in my frozen smoothies, there's no taste, it's a little gritty, but the strawberries and banana hide the taste.

Soy Protein powder is another similar option. I find that it tastes better than the whey Proteins. I've heard that the whey Proteins have more useable protein that the body can absorb compared to other kinds, but I don't know if that is true.

In general, if I blend a whey protein powder with something that has a lot of flavor the taste does not bother me. For example, if I mix a chocolate Protein shake with banana and Peanut Butter ,and then put in a scoop of chocolate or unflavored unjury, I don't taste the protein.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
