What do I need after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My surgery is scheduled for Friday, January 24th. I'm preparing myself for when I come home and I wanted to know what do I need to help ease the pain and discomfort? I'm compiling a list of things to purchase prior to surgery so any input is appreciated.

I would get some gas-x and make sure you have a heating pad on hand. This will help with the gas pain that settles in your joints(usually) after your surgery.

food wise- broth, SF Jell-O and pudding. SF popsicles. Make sure you have a yummy Protein shake picked out. You'll need mushies, which you can put just about anything in a blender and make it mushie. Drink lots of Water. I use Crystal Light to flavor my Water, but some bandsters prefer other types of flavoring.

Search the web for bariatric food recipes- there a ton of excellent Protein Shake ideas!

.

Everybody's pain threshold is different. I was in pain for about three days then I was fine. Just remember to walk as much as you have. AND be EXCITED you're starting a journey of commitment and triumphant!

The biggest help tome was a heating pad for my tummy. Also stock up on broth (beef was most soothing to me), sugar free popsicles and Jello, i drank apple juice too for my sugar bcuz im hypoglycemic. A lot of pplrecommend gas x but i just used that for the first time in week 2.

Hi Nahila, congratulations on your upcoming date! Very exciting. I liked having a pillow in the car for the ride home -- something to press on my belly for comfort. Also good to hold it there for laughing or coughing. Best wishes for smooth sailing and an easy recovery. Keep us posted!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
