Hi! Anyone been to Dr. Jose Luis Curiel Marchena or know anything about him? He is at hospital Jerusalem but I can't find anyone talking about him on any boards.

Thanks!

I have not heard of him and I had been researching Tijuana surgeons since December.

My best to you.

Hello - same here I am scheduled to have surgery with him through the Medical Tourism company and have it at Clinica San Jose - I just put my deposit down and booked my flights so now that its real I am desperately searching for some comfort and hearing some good news about both and praying it is all legit.

I have never heard of him. I had my surgery in Tijuana in January 2014 with Dr Elias Ortiz. In my research, his name never came up.

One thing I learned when researching for my past surgery in Tijuana was that Jerusalem Hospital is not a hospital. It's a clinic in a little strip mall. The physician who owned it passed away earlier this year. I'm not sure of any changes made since his passing. I'm sure people have had successful experiences there. The main concern would be the lack of a critical care unit in the event of complications.

My best to you.

Shannon87: how can you proceed with a huge decision to have surgery with a surgeon who is unknown to you and you hope it's legit..

Most people on this forum do research and read experiences of patients who have already been through the surgery process. I would be cautious taking the word of a Medical Tourism company. At least request patient testimonials.

Going into surgery with serious questions about the surgeon is scary. If cost is a major concern, there are reasonable options.

What about the hospital? Aftercare? How many procedures has the doctor performed? Complication rate? Contact his patients.

Very good questions and I agree - Medical Tourism provided his resume and credentials, he has done over 1000 surgeries and he is a member of some Bariatric organizations. I have heard from one person who found someone that did it with him and said he was clean. I also saw a testimonial on youtube with Dr. Cruiel interviewing one of his patients who just had the surgery. Thankfully my father is a doctor and will be accompanying me on the trip to make sure hospital and doctor is up to standards. My father reviewed his resume and credentials and they looked fine. So yes I would love to have more info on him but his resume, and other items on him seem to check out. But I am going to ask his complication rate and have a conference call for my father to talk with him. Thank you for the questions and word of caution I would agree. I feel have acquired further info that has help ease some of my stress but surgery is surgery and in another country still leaves me a little nervous.

I had VSG surgery with Dr. Curiel and San Juan Clinica on Tuesday 8/26/14. My experience could not have been better!!! I did my research, asked questions of my coordinator (Regene with Medical Tourism) and went by myself. I was picked up at the San Diego airport, delivered to a very nice hotel and casino before surgery the next day. I took a taxi to a beautiful beach with the other person having surgery with me and was well rested when we went to the clinic Tuesday morning. The staff at SJC was amazing and I love them, even if there was a bit of a language barrier. I stayed at the clinic 2 nights and on Thursday had the X ray and leak test that morning and then after consulting with the Dr., I had my drain removed and was released back to the states where I had made reservations near the San Diego airport for an early Friday flight home. My surgery went off without a hitch and Dr. Curiel has done over 1500 bariatric surgeries. In my opinion, you couldn't have a more caring and professional group to take care of you. Also, the clinic was very nice, super clean, and private and quiet. Tell the nurses that Todd from Nashville said "hola" and that I miss them all. I'll see them next year when I go back for my Tummy Tuck. lol you're in great hands. Don't worry. Lastly, and this may sound odd, enjoy the experience because I really did. The pain from surgery is very manageable. I've had worse pain from the gas from surgery since I've been home. And I've lost 20lbs since my pre op liquid diet I started on 8/21/14!! Good luck and God bless. I'm loving my sleeve!

I had my sleeve with dr. Curiel at hospital jerusalem. He was great. I had no problems and he came and talked to me for a while prior to surgery. I would highly recommend him

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
