Hi:

:help: If we are sticking to clear fluids - broths, etc. where does our Protein come from for the first 2 weeks after surgery?

Thanks for all the tremendous help and inspiration. My surgery is this coming Monday :clap2: - just trying to get the house stocked with things I can have!

Benbax :)

I am still trying different Protein Shakes out that I will like but I have been cooking with Protein powder that doesn't have any taste to my meals for over a year now.. also there is a Liquid Protein thats out and I put that in smoothies.. kinda citrus flavor.. its good and when mixed with tea, smoothies, vanilla (or any flav. other then chocolate) protein shakes, it tastes real good. I know some people that will take a swig of it straight for engery.

I'm having a VERY hard time getting in all my Protein. I had nearly none for 5 days because I was on "clear liquids" I know that doesn't include shakes of any kind. I'm on full liquids now for 2 weeks. The only way I'm getting any protein is my muscle milk light, yogurt and skim milk.

I tried putting protein powder in my Tomato Soup last night it it turned thick and gloppy and disgusting.

Does anyone have a liquid to protein powder ratio I should be using?

How do you know how much to add to your liquids? There are no instructions or cooking type chart on the kind I bought.

I know my pretein is low, I can't walk a flight of stairs without my leg muscles throbbing when I get to the top.

B4 surgery I was walking 2 miles a day w/ no problems.

Alot of Protein powders have consistency problems at higher temperatures. I think the one I use is not recommended for anything over 130 F. If your Soup was hot (rather than warm) I bet that's where you had a problem.

I went online and got samples of different kinds (and there's lots more than just chocolate/vanilla/unflavored). They were about $2 per sample, but considering I ended up wiht 3 flavors I love, and no leftovers for the many flavors I disliked...it was well worth it for me. Look at www.wlssupplies.com or www.vitalady.com as they both have sample programs (i'm sure there are more companies out there too, just those I know of off the top of my head).

Brands in my house right now...

IDS Low Carb Belgian chocolate

SCI-Fit Choclate Marshmallow

ELITE chocolate Mint

SYNTREX nectar - Cherry

unjury unflavored

I have some unflavored Designer whey but I hate it, though I know its very popular. Just mixes poorly and had a bad aftertaste, and the Unjury is much better mixing and not nearly as smelly.

But that's how I keep my Protein up (plus cottage cheese and tuna...dang those are high in protein.)

P.S. Protein drinks were all allowed on my day 2-7 for post op-diet. Only the first day of surgery was I not allowed to have it. I think for most purposes the clear diet includes Protein Drinks.< /p>

Hi Benbax!

Welcome to LBT!

They make clear liquid Protein. I use IDS New whey. 42 grams of Protein in a little test tube. I cut mine with filtered Water or mix it with Propel. It's a little like drinking melted Jello, straight. **Personally, I stick to the Orange flavor. fruit punch is less exciting. I haven't tried any other flavors.

You can buy it on-line, here. http://www.dpsnutrition.net/get_by_79.htm

Be sure to get the 42 gram ones, vs the 25 gram older version. More bang for your buck.

I know others have found it in local Vitamin Shops. GNC doesn't have it, or at least they didn't have it 2 months ago when I went looking.

I mix one test tube in a 1 liter big mouth bottle with a Propel and fill the bottle the rest of the way with filtered Water.< /p>

I find that 42 grams for 176 calories (or 196 if you mix it with a propel) is a much better deal than 5 grams for 50 calories.

Good luck with your surgery!

I buy the big bag of Protein powder at costco. I buy the vanilla (there is also chocolate) and to that I add, half a banana, about 7 ice cubes, a handful of blueberries and 8 oz. skim milk. Blend well! I really enjoy it and have it every morning. It has 27 grams of Protein for the 2 scoops. Hope that helps!

I was given samples of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder. I ordered some online for post-surgery (I get banded 3/29). You can add it to Soups, sugar-free puddings and Jello, etc., and it is unnoticable. Be careful not to add it to anything over 130 degrees, though. (You can use a meat thermometer to measure liquid temps).

When choosing Protein supplements, I was told to MAKE SURE it is a whey protein isolate. I was also told to avoid GNC because they are often uninformed about protein needs for bariatric patients. If you google "unjury" you can find more info.

I personally can't stand those Protein shakes, so I'm getting mine drinking high Protein Slimfast; Special K protein Water, and yogurt - lots of yogurt!

Be careful with the Slimfast as it has alot of sugar in it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
