Gastric Sleeve or Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am new to weighloss surgery I have never had it done...but I am reading and trying to figure out which one to have. I didn't think that many people were still having the bypass surgery but I AM WRONG? So I need to ask those who had revision what did you had previously and what do you have now...I need to see which maybe best for me and also consult with the doctor

I believe they say that bypass is the gold standard but I didn't go that way. I had a band and was revised to a sleeve. I'm only 3 weeks out but so far I love it! I've already lost 17 lbs in just three weeks. I chose the sleeve because I just need to eat less. But what I do eat, I want to absorb the nutrients from it. I was also not wanting to have the "dumping syndrome" that many bypass patients have. Meaning if u eat sugar, it dumps into ur intestines too fast and u get really sick with vomiting and diarrhea. Some ppl want that to happen though because it keeps then away from that kind of stuff. That's not for me though. I would rather just be able to eat a very small amount of food and lose weight. Continue your research and read all you can from real people not just studies and such and see which would work out best for your needs. There may be some bypass patients who will offer advise too or tell you the reason they chose bypass over the sleeve. It's your own journey.

I think if you have 150 pounds or less to lose you should consider the sleeve. Anything more than 150 pounds (and/or diabetes or a severe sugar addiction) you should consider bypass. Those are the guidelines my surgeon set for us in the initial consultation and I tend to think that was as well.

I had a band for 2 1/2 years. It slipped 1 1/2 years and had it repositioned last January 2013. Then I was taking it slow because I heard it it slips once the band is likely slip again. Well, I found out in October 2013 it slipped again and my Dr said it is best to come out because it will continue to slip. He said I could remove the band all together, remove the band and revise it to the sleeve later or remove the band and revise to the sleeve at the same time. I chose remove the band and revise to the sleeve in one surgery. I choose the sleeve because i didnt what my everything rerouted and have problems with malabsorbtion. My Doctor does very few bands nowadays, unless someone's insurance will not cover the sleeve. He still does bypasses but not as many as before because of the sleeve. He said it's kinda known in the profession as "sleeve 'em and leave 'em". Sounds kinda mean but it means there is less upkeep with the sleeve than with the band.

Just do all the research you can on both and you'll make the best decision for you.

I chose the sleeve but I wanted the bypass because the weight loss is so fast. I had about 120 pounds to lose. My doc's opinion was the I didn't meet his qualifications for bypass but if I chose it, he would do it. I talked to my friend who had the bypass and asked her opinion and she recommended the sleeve. I did worry about the lack of absorption of nutrients and that was my main reason for choosing the sleeve., That's her main reason why she recommended sleeve too. I am very happy with my choice. Best of luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
