Can I wear a bra during surgery?

Recommended Posts

My surgery isn't until March and I haven't done my pre-op meeting yet (it's February 19th). Can I wear a bra during surgery? I just don't know if you can only just wear a gown.

No bra, no panties, fir many reasons. First if all, germs. You wore those underclothes at home and they have micro-organisms on them. They need to put on EKG leads and the bra gets in the way. They use electrical stuff during the surgery so if there's any metal on the bra it can burn you. Also, they scrub your entire abdomen to just under your boobs and just above your pelvic area so underclothes get in the way.

Will I be able to put one on afterward? As in, will I be able to move enough to stretch and put one on or will I be in too much pain? I feel really uncomfortable without a bra in public. Thanks for giving me a heads up!

My surgeon put an abdominal binder on after surgery and I woke up with it. That said, it was relatively easy to slip a bra on over it, and I am pretty well-endowed.

But you'll probably need to keep it off after the surgery while you're in the hospital. It's not exactly public...

They will give you hospital undies if you are on it period. I put on a sports bra after surgery. The girls hanging, and the drain etc was just too much for me to take! I wear a sports bra everyday since surgery. The girls are just easier to keep under control!

Sorry to say I don't think so. I was not able to. I think it would be in the way of the tools and the bacteria germ issue.

They even had me do a series of special soap washes (pretty orange stuff) the day before surgey and the morning of on my belly. It killed all skin bacteria. I was also instructed to only put on clothing that had just been washed. The hospital gowns were actually really big so for once the goods were all covered, front and back lol.

I was allowed to post op but I felt so crappy and had a problem even raising my arms over my head so I didn't bother wearing one. I didn't care!!

Nope. Just your birthday suit underneath the gown.

My girls were happy to be free for a minute..lol..they're usually bolted down.

But as soon as I woke up in my room and was able, I put my bra on... so I could walk around the hospital floor.

One of my incisions was right under the center part of my bra so i could not have had it on during surgery or after for a few days.

I put a snug tank top on after. I have an incision that would have been irritated with a sports bra.

Hi, just a thought.

My surgeon

(a female) specifically told me in a pre-op appointment that she we would not put an incision in my bra line or in my waist line. I had not thought of this myself, BUT so extremely helpful post-op. I was able to put my bra on as quickly as I wanted & it never rubbed the incision. This allowed for very quick healing.

So grateful for her thoughtfulness in that regard.

Mention to your surgeon how important it is to you to be able to wear your bra pronto post-op so hopefully your upper incision can be placed below your bra line. We all tend to have a bit a mark on our skin from the years of wearing our bras so it is not hard for the surgeon to see that.

I even tightened mine up a notch the morning of surgery so she would have a very clear line to go off of lol.

I was able to wear mine no problem from the get go post op.

I couldn't contort myself enough to try and put one on. Plus I was constantly hooked to an IV the first day.

I couldn't have worn one if I wanted to but I brought a full length fuzzy robe with me to wear when walking around the hospital floor and warm socks because it's always cold in the hospital.

So it sounds like the first day I'll be so drugged up and/or in pain that I won't care about my floppy waffle boobs flapping in the wind. I guess that's what the rest of the hospital expects to see anyway. And probably no one really cares anyway. Braless in "public" just feels so unnatural. I hope my boobs are the first thing to go with weight loss!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
