Losing interest in food

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am one month post op from bypass and all of a sudden I don't even care about eating anymore. I am to the point where I am making myself take tuna or yogurt for lunch, and between 2 Protein Drinks and lunch, if I am eating the right thing, I am getting 90 grams of Protein. Do I have to eat food? I will definitely be bringing this up at my one month checkup Tuesday. Also I still feel as fat as I was before surgery, I feel like my face is bigger and I am always afraid of putting weight back on. Any suggestions? Is this normal? I mean of course I am still big; even though I have lost 30 pounds, I am still 239, which is big! Anyone else experience similar?

I have friends who didn't eat much food for a long time. With that said, once you lose what you want to or reach goal, you have to learn how to HANDLE food so that is the process you need to be learning as you go along. What works for you, protein wise in FOOD; how to get protein IN Using food; what works for me as an average day in maintenance, etc. Also, as you go along, you will get back your food desire. I would t worry too much about it now. You are doing well!

After surgery did you have an apatite ?

No, I did not. Thankfully. I couldn't tolerate the Protein Shakes either so I was hard pressed to get my full Protein but I forced myself to do the clear protein drinks Isopure. Yuck! The very thought now makes me want to nard! Ha!

And Water was the worst. Made me totally nauseous so I quickly discovered Crystal Light and for then on, sip sip sip and a few bites of whatever and I was good for months. :)

Z, this is entirely normal. Eventually your appetite will return. Just keep getting in your Protein and liquids. Your losses will show soon, just be patient and realize that many people only lose a pound or two a week. Not everyone loses 3-4 lbs a week. Keep up the good work!

I feel bad. I get hungry :o(. I am slowly testing my waters with foods and when I eat something I find myself hiccuping or burping a lot. Do you get that? I bought the isoprene drinks before surgery and now the thought of them makes me gag.

My family has come to realize (and roll their eyes) because once food gets to a certain place in my little stomach I Sneeze! Not once, not twice, about 7-8 times!! Pretty much standard issue! When I'm out or at work, they "bless me" and "bless me". Ha! I feel bad but they don't have a clue! Ha!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
