I have been banded since May 2013, done great lost almost 60# and am where I need to be. But this is embarrassing I have gas so so bad that it's getting to be where I so mot want to go out in public. I drink 2 Protein Shakes a day then have 1 serving of salmon or chicken with small serving of sweet potato and that's it period! I am eating gas x pills like candy. I am just wondering has any others noticed an explosion of flatulence after being banded for 5-6 months? Thanks!

OMG! Yes, sadly it's a bit part of the banded life to an extent. I will tell you this though when I drink Protein shakes or have Protein Bars they cause WAY more gas then is normal. The reason for me is because they are made from whey Protein and that is made from dairy which can cause a bit of lactose intolerance.

I spoke with my doctor and she advised taking Lactaid tablet they have them in chewable tabs before and/or after having one of those protein products and that has stopped those bursts of gas!

Know what u mean. I eat my egg/ham/cheese in am and tuna or chicken at lunch and by early afternoon I am so miserable! Some days worse than others. Im gonna ask my surgeon next month if he can insert an air release valve in my tummy, lol!

Do you think that this is because the narrower opening doesn't allow the gas to rise and escape as a burp, so it all gets pushed through and comes out as toots? I was always a gassy person anyway, now it's just ridiculous.

I was banded in March 2013 and before I was never a "belcher", but I sound like a grown man now! I dealt with a bad bout of gas pains a few nights ago. Need to invest in some Gas X strips for those hard to bear times.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
