If You Diet Before WLS Surely Your weight Loss Will Be Slower After WLS?

Recommended Posts

This is probably a silly question and I think I already know the answer but:

If you diet prior to your surgery including milk or liver reducing diet here...will your loss be slower than someone who had not dieted??? You know like the amazing loses after one or two weeks of a diet.

Now I think if you were dieting (any form of conventional diets) prior to your surgery, it would have a huge impact on the speed of weight loss after WLS...I think your loss after surgery would be far slower but maybe steadier.

Any experience of this anyone? (Post op people)

Any ideas? (Pre or post op)

Say for example I am doing Cambridge Diet right now, as you know it's a very low calorie diet...I was 246lb and now 238lb and it came off quickly due to it being the first few days...loss of glycogen and Water mostly...but I will still continue to have a good weight loss on this type of diet.

Now, say I lose 42 lbs in just over 3 months, say by 10th January(very possible with CD) and my surgery is is on the 10th of January...I would imagine that as I have already lost a lot of weight my rate of loss has to be slower than if I had not dieted at al prior to surgery.

Xx

i lost (a lot on my pre and post op liquid diet) as i was only intaking liquids

its natural to lose weight on low calorie (diets) or all liquids.... it will slow down...people expect to have those big loses every week....it doesnt work that way....and larger BMI people can lose faster than those who are not as large as me when i started..

i have lost steady for 19+ months..hope my answer helps

This is only my personal experience and I'm sure it will vary depending on the person, but I lost 45 pounds before my surgery by eating healthy food around 1300-1500 calories daily. My surgery was 5 1/2 months ago and my total loss is 124 pounds! So, since surgery, that's 79 pounds. I follow my nutritionists instructions faithfully and I exercise 5-6 times a week too. I have had stalls. One was around 3 weeks long (it sucked)!! The scale goes up and down, but eventually it's a loss. I'm thrilled with the results! Best thing I ever did for myself and my health!!

Thank you ladies.

I was just curious...When I had the Sleeve a few years ago I didn't have to do the pre-op diet at all so my weight loss was really good the week after surgery.

Now I'm having the bypass and having to do a pre-op diet I wondered if it will be at a reduced rate because I'm already two weeks in.

Maybe a lot changes at the point of the operation itself, like metabolic rates, hormonal production, or loss or inactivation of some hormones like grehlin.

Do you mind if I ask why you are having the bypass? I was sleeved 3 1/2 years ago and would like the info for reference if you don't mind discussing.

First of all Georgia I would like to say that most of the time the sleeve is an excellent WLS.

In my case I lost all restriction and also developed much more severe reflux. I had an upper endoscopy and it was noted that my stomach was a normal size. I gain back so much of my weight as a result. I have a large opening and my stomach is twisted further down. This put me in ER twice over one weekend and the pain was unbearable.

You are 3 years out so it looks like your sleeve is a complete success...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
