Normal Eating ever Again????

Recommended Posts

I am going through the steps now to get the lap band. I really think this will help me, I have tried diet after diet, with 20- 30 lbs lost but then I gain it all back and then some. I sure everyone here understands that. My real question is will I every eat normally again? I know I would be able to eat large amount, thats great. Just will I be able to eat steak again? Will there are be some foods I can not have, or is that just at first? I know right now I am just scared, will it work. Any input please.:help:

Well, im only about 2 weeks post op, and i was scared for the same reason. from what i've been told, yes you can eat normally. there will be some things that your stomach MIGHT not be able to handle but pretty much you can have whatever. they say you really cant have like the normal candy....if you HAVE to have some they say get sugar free...for the obvious reasons. and the ppl i've talked to say that they can eat steak but they get the really tender stuff because you have to chew really really well. but other then that its really not a bad deal considering what your gonna LOOSE!!!! and good luck!!!!!

I felt like this, too, when I first got the band. Let me just reassure you that yes, you will enjoy eating again. The first few weeks really... suck. But you'll eat normally again, I promise. I can eat ANYTHING, if I eat it slow enough. Sometimes it's just not worth it, though. Like a tough steak, the time it takes to chew is just not worth it. So I choose other items and don't even miss it. But FYI, I haven't had any problems at all with MOST steak, if that's your fav food. My problems are with, believe it or not, Peanut Butter south beach Cereal bars, and sandwiches. The Cereal bars I still eat because i love the taste, I just eat them slow. I never cared for sandwiches, so great, who cares if I can't eat them easily.

There's light at the end of your newly banded tunnel. I hardly ever remember that I'm banded now, except that I visit this site sometimes.

Actually a sandwich would be the most difficult food I can think of and I never liked them much either, so dont miss them.

Like Puddin, I can eat anything if I eat it slowly enough.

Some foods surprise you, things you think will be easy to eat. I had a bowl of cornflakes a week or two back for Breakfast as we had half a box left from making honey joys for a kids party. Those were SO hard to eat!

YOu dont know what your problem foods will be, but you may be lucky and not really have any. I can promise you that you dont really miss what gives you grief to eat.

I'm about 5 weeks post-op and I feel pretty "normal". I've had steak, hamburger, etc and really haven't found anything that I can't eat yet. I agree with Jachut, you really won't know what your problem foods will be until after the surgery.

Angel, I eat just about anything just in smaller portions. You will definitely have to cut your meat the size of a pencil eraser. You will do fine. Good luck to you.

Thanks, hearing that makes me feel better. I know I don't eat normally now, it to much or I wouldn't be here. This site is so great, thanks for the help. I will keep moving forward, I know this will be hard but worth it in the end.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
