tkauhi 90 Posted January 16, 2014 I've had a few surgery and I always come out with a parched throat and dry mouth. Are we allowed to have ice chips in recovery? I'll double check with my team but just wondered your experiences.
Bronco0605 135 Posted January 16, 2014 I had the gastric sleeve. I was not allowed anything at all by mouth until the next day after my leak test, upper gi X-ray. Then I was allowed fluids.
tkauhi 90 Posted January 16, 2014 That makes sense. But I'm sure gonna want some ice chips. Lol
tirsh29 7 Posted January 16, 2014 I wasnt able to have ANYTHING from midnight sunday, surgery was monday. Mouth and throat were extremely dry when I came out, and same thing.... absolutely nothing to eat or drink until I had the swallow test tuesday am.
BBdoodle 483 Posted January 16, 2014 I was allowed to sip Water, I was told to sip, sip, sip to keep hydrated. You might want to bring Chap Stick that helps.

jacileggs 402 Posted January 17, 2014 Probably depends on your surgeon. Mine does a leak test in the OR. So I'm assuming when you wake up you start fluids. Guess I will know for sure on Tuesday.
tkauhi 90 Posted January 17, 2014 Mine said something about a leak test in the OR....I meet with him on the 23rd and I'll ask him about it. There was so much info to digest on my first visit that I didn't catch everything. I'm very hard of hearing and I have to bring my bf to all my appointments and he relays the parts I don't hear. I'll ask him and see what he said. I sure Hope I can have sips or ice chips but either way I'm not going to complain. I'm just grateful to be having this done. :-)
tkauhi 90 Posted January 17, 2014 I checked and my doctor does the leak test before a person leaves the OR.
newat52 1,613 Posted January 17, 2014 Mine did the leak test in the OR. As soon as I got back to my room I was given Ice chips. That was a blessing! 1 tkauhi reacted to this
