Nail polish off before surgery?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else's Surgeon packet say they have to have their nail polish off before surgery?

and does anyone know why that is?

I believe that while under anesthesia they need to be able to see the color of your nails to determine the saturation of Oxygen during surgery.

They wanted mine off, but I had shellac polish on my fingernails and it wasn't gonna come off. They took my toenail polish off. I wish I had know before so I wouldn't have wasted the money on a pedicure.

Requiring fingernail polish to be removed is a holdover from long ago, before pulse oximeters were in common use. You are correct that back then, the anesthesiologist wanted to be able to see the fingernails to guage oxygenation -- pink nail beds = good, purple = not good.

Modern hospitals now use a pulse oximeter (ox SIMM i ter) instead. It's a little device that is gently clipped onto a finger. It reads the O2 saturation through the skin on the pad of the finger, not through the nail, so nail polish is irrelevant. My anesthesiologist said even my acrylic nails would not be a problem.

That said, some hospitals still cling to the old ways...

I had to take my polish off. Sometimes the pulse ox does not read correctly with polish on. I was told that red polish can cause issues. I didn't want to take a chance of them refusing my surgery so had no polish or acrylic nails on.

All they told me was no makeup, but I took my shellac off anyway, just to be safe.

I asked at my preop apt about the hospital policy. My surgeons handbook said no polish, but the hospital said I could have it on my toes. I wanted to get a pedi so bad before surgery (partly to help me fill the day before surgery w/distractions lol) and didn't want to waste $ if they were going to make me remove the polish. They told me no color on my fingers but I could do clear. I just ended up leaving my hands alone.

I could have polish on toes but not on hands. I also could not have any body lotion, deodorant or makeup on.

they made me remove polish from both fingers and toes. I got a mani-pedi with no polish as a compromise. they used the monitor on the finger but still wanted no polish.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
