Hi,

Surgery was on 9/1/04 and am waiting for first fill @ 6 weeks. Whenever I try to eat anything past full liquids I get a strong cramp/ache/burn in upper stomach. Is this normal? It HURTS. What is it? Has anyone else out there had this? I've only lost one pound since surgery. Any thoughts?

I had mine on Aug. 27th, and am also waiting for a fill. I haven't had any pain or cramping. I did two weeks of liquids and a little applesauce and pudding here and there, and have lost 14 pounds in these two weeks. Yesterday I started with ham salad and had some cottage cheese, scrambled egg and a chopped up chicken nugget with no issues. Today a little chicken salad so far with no issues. It almost seems too easy, and I'm although I get full; it doesn't last very long.

Have you had your first follow-up with the Dr.?

You are a very new bandster. How long are you supposed to be on liquids? You haven't healed enough yet to try to eat anything. If your body hurts, it is telling you to stop! Please be sure that you really need a fill before you get on. Best of luck to you! Take care!:D

I completely agree with Marie. My doctor's post-surgery diet was pretty lenient compared to some others I've seen, with permission to move on to mushy foods at one week out. So I tried that, and really found that I couldn't. My body just wasn't ready for it. So listen to your body, and if it hurts, DON'T DO IT. Lots of doctors call for multi-week liquid regimens, and I think most really recommend waiting at least two full weeks before attempting solids of any kind.

I also agree with waiting if you are having trouble. I didn't have any trouble like that... What are you moving to from 'full liquids'? I had nothing but broth and tea and Water for the first 3 or 4 days and then moved to soft pudding and yogurt. After that I had some refried Beans (at about 2 weeks), and things of that consistancy...

Also, about only losing one pound since surgery, you aren't really trying to lose weight yet. It's all about healing right now, I don't even think you should look at a scale .

Keep us posted, good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
