One Week Post Op- haven't lost any weight?

Recommended Posts

I was one week post op yesterday. I have been eating what I am supposed to and trying to get all my fluids in. May not be meeting Protein goals but my NUT said that's okay the first couple weeks. I have had a few complications. I have had severe left side pain that kept me from even getting out of bed for about 4 days. Well, I got up for the bathroom and went back to bed crying from the pain. Yesterday when I went back for my one week follow up, they took my staples out and one of my incisions didn't heal on the inside and started draining this brown Fluid. So now I have an open wound on my left abdomen that I have to pack with gauze. I guess that was the cause of the pain I have had. They said it isn't an infection, just a collection of fluid that kept the incision from healing. So now i have to keep it open and draining and let it heal inside out. It is still very sore. Walking hurts a lot. So here is the question. I haven't lost anything since surgery. Is that because I have just been laying in bed most of the time? I haven't ate very much. Just cottage cheese and yogurt mostly. Some Soup. If anything, I may not be eating enough. So what do you think? Did you lose quickly after surgery? I am getting discouraged. It seems crazy to me that I am not losing. Thanks for any ideas!

I'm surprised your doc lets you eat dairy and the stuff your having so soon. I would guess the answer is yes it's due to eating those things and being in bed. To lose one pound you have to lose 3000 calories, or 3500 I don't remember. . But if your laying in bed your burning the normal amount a day minus what you eat.. that total number is all your burning extra,,, but remember you also have extra Water weight from surgery etc. Just relax, you will get there

I am sorry to hear that things have been challenging for you. I would focus more on healing and less on what the scale says, for right now. Do not get discouraged! Remember, this isn't a race and there is no finish line. Some weeks I only lose one pound. Some weeks I lose three or four. I have never let that discourage me. My body fat percentage has dropped an average of 1.2% a month, to me that is more of a victory than that silly number on the scale. Best wishes on your recovery!!

Sorry to hear you're struggling! I actually gained in the first week after surgery due to all the fluids they pump us full of. My friend gained, too. Before you know it, you'll be losing! Feel better soon!

Thank you to everyone for the advice. I hope as I start moving more, it kicks in. I did a little better today, was up more. Trying to get my fluids in, I don't think I have been doing very well at that. That could very easily affect the weight loss too I think. Whoever said this was the easy way out sure didn't do it first!!!! LOL

Like Patticake, I gained 11 pounds post-op from fluids given at the hospital. It took me a whole week to get back down to my pre-surgery weight. Even not exercising or eating you will lose but the fluids go first. Be easy on yourself, rest and heal. You've just had major surgery! As you heal and begin introducing foods you'll feel better enough to walk. Take care! :-)

I just wanted to second and third some of the other posts. I gained nearly ten pounds from the surgery and fluids after. Don't worry. You're normal! I sure hope you get up and around better very soon. :-)

Just be a bit more patient, I too was worried that I hadn't lost any weight in the first week, but i needed to remember the huge amount of fluids that i was given in the Hospital. My Dr. told me not to expect any big weight loss for about 2 months. I wore a size 16 or 18 (depending on how tight they were) on the day of surgery 15 weeks later I'm wearing a size 8 skinny jean. Keep faith, it will come off.

Same here I gained 10 pounds from Water weight. I had my surgery June 23 and I'm still 1 pound heavier then I was for surgery. I've been healing fast I was shopping the second day. I think because I walk a lot I'm healing fast. I'm trying to get water and Protein in, it's hard for me????. Every evening I reflect on my day trying to learn this new way of life.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
