First Stuck - Still feeling sick

Recommended Posts

After my 2 week liquid diet, 2 week mushie diet, I have finally progressed to solid foods. I was really hungry and wanted a bite of bread. Bread has gone down before, but I didn't chew it enough yesterday. It did not go down well. My body didn't even want to swallow Water. I forced some Water down but it didn't move the bread. I did have to go to the bathroom at the restaurant and it was just, I guess it's called more of a PB than full on vomiting. The bread still didn't come up but I felt a bit better. I was able to eat my meal. Fast forward to today, my throat still feels swollen and I still feel sick. I only had a Protein shake this morning. I called my surgeons office and the nurse said to stay on warm liquids for 24 hours and to call them back if I don't feel better. I have not had a fill yet and was thinking it would go down since my surgery swelling went down. Sigh.

Do you guys have any other suggestions? Have you still felt nauseated the next day? I feel more like there's something still in the back of my throat and that makes me feel like I need to throw up. It's difficult to drink coffee or anything else. It's going down, but my body doesn't want to swallow anything.

I like your surgeon's office suggestion. It is important to stay on liquids for a day after stuck because you are swollen from being stuck and pb'ing. Take it easy, your surgeon may have put in a starter fill. bread is hard for us to digest because it is so soft and doughy! Take care, Kare..aka.kll724

I'm just so used to when I'm feeling sick / nauseated that I want saltines and either a coke or ginger ale to settle my stomach.

Oh dear, so sorry. Hope you feel better today. It's a reminder to us to take it easy, choose wisely and chew slowly. I don't eat bread as not only is it too Gummy but I am also trying to do Protein first then veggies. I have had a slice of gluten-free toast with an egg on it -- the GF is not glutenous (well, duh) but also the egg soaked into the bread and made it softer. However, now that I've had another fill I doubt I would try this again. I just had a stuck episode recently (it was fish, cold and overcooked and I probably ate it too fast!). Even the day or two after I was still taking it very easy, doing liquids, smoothies, applesauce & yogurt, etc. Now I'm back to having a bit of chili, etc. "Real" food, which is my goal.

Best part of this post is that you called it in and got advice from your surgeon's office. That's what they are there for! We are here to tell you we have done it as well and we sympathize! Best wishes!

It's my fault. I knew better. I was just hungry and didn't eat tiny bites and/or just wait for normal food. Longhorn bread is just soooo good.

Thanks for your sympathies. This is no fun. I guess I'm glad that I learned at this stage and it was just a small date night with the fiancé and not a big group meal. Also, I'm glad that I did make it to the bathroom in time.

I was so excited to get to solid food that I progressed too quickly. Mushies are easy to chew well. Real food takes more thought.

Your surgeon gave you good advice - liquids for a while until the swelling goes down, warm liquids are best as it relaxes your band.

bread is a difficult food for most bandsters. I have difficulty with certain types of rice, Pasta, uncooked veggies. I'm sure there are other things but these are the ones that come to mind.

Hope you feel better soon!

If I could give you one piece of advice (besides warm clear broth) it would be to just stop eating bread. It ultimately is one of the reasons we are in need of a band to begin with... and it usually doesn't go down very well any way :).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
