I always think that sometimes our body has it's own way of healing itself faster or letting you know that everything is all good. When I had my gallbladder removed several years ago, I would start coughing and hiccuping. Never had this happened before. There was nothing to be done but let it happen. When I came home still quite hunched over from the incision (they tried to go lap but couldn't) and what did I do? I missed the last two steps of the stairs! Ouch! I chalked it up to life's way of kicking you in the butt and saying, 'heal already' :) Time's a wasting...

Congrats on you surgery!!!

My grandma always got a coffee cup of Water, stirred a sharpened lead pencil in it for 1 minute and then drank it.... It worked for her! Idk!?! Lol I never personally really ever had bad hiccups.

Unfortunately I am not able to drink just yet. I had an open RNY done so the hiccups make me feel like they're ripping my insides out...I also had my gallbladder removed, so that's a weird coincidents!

This is the first time I've heard of hiccups immediately following surgery. But I found a few months after my surgery I would sometimes start sneezing while eating. Sometimes six or even eight times. It was so weird that I decided to do some research to see if I could get an idea of what was going on. It turns out that it is technically referred to as "gustatory rhinitis" and is fairly common following a number of abdominal surgeries. And it's not limited to sneezing. Hiccups and a runny nose are also very common symptoms.

Now here's the cool part (well, sort of) - it often occurs when your stomach/pouch is full. That is most definitely the case with me. If I start sneezing, I'm done eating! I read one article that suggested it is associated with the proximity of the stomach (and possibly other abdominal organs) to a nerve or nerves associated with sneezing/hiccups/runny nose. The theory is that pressure on the nerves from a full stomach triggers the symptoms. So it's not much of a stretch (Lol - no pun intended) to think that swelling from the surgery could have the same effect with some folks.

I'd be very interested in what your doctor said about the hiccups.

Hiccups aside, congratulations on your surgery! You're gonna love the new you!!

Oh my I will definitely be trying that! My ribs are killing me from hiccuping so much :( my dr did tell me sometime when you have stomach spasms it'll make you hiccup. I've had terrible spasms and was told I was even hiccuping while I was on the ventilator which isn't common

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
