Mediterranean Diet

Recommended Posts

My daughter just got back from a week long conference for cardiologists in Miami, Florida...

She tells me 70% of this conference had to do with Prevention, and a Heart Healthy Lifestyle...

Specifically, they were emphasizing the Mediterranean Diet

that emphasizes fruits, veggies, whole grains, Beans, nuts, legumes, olive oil, and flavorful herbs and spices; eating fish and seafood at least a couple of times a week; enjoying poultry, eggs, cheese, and yogurt in moderation; and saving sweets and red meat for special occasions. Top it off with a splash of red wine....

Seeing how I have had one heart attack, etc...she was all over me with this information....

Ironically, since being banded, this is what I have already gravitated to on my own, mainly because of the band....

Only difference is I never eat meat at all now, and the diet calls for once a month....and I stay away from eggs also....everything else has been spot on....

Go figure....

I honestly don't miss meat. You don't realize how sweet and good fruit is until you stop eating sweets. I love cherries. Once in a while if I make Soup I will eat the meat but I do eat a lot of eggs. Mainly because they are easy and good Protein in a pinch if I don't have time for anything else. I love Beans they are the brunt of my diet now.

See? This is why there are few fat French people. Well, the Mediterrean diet and the fact that being fat is viewed as a sin far worse than infidelity here (cf. President Hollande ;) ).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
