Cash pay patients who have had insurance help after being diagnosed with a HIATAL HERNIA

Recommended Posts

It has been recommended to me and I keep hearing this pop up that if my Dr. does a scope prior to surgery and finds a Hiatal Hernia that I may receive some assistance with insurance.

Just curious if this has happened to anyone out there. I have Blue Cross and there is a specific exclusion in my plan for bariatric surgery. I had a surgeon tell me he has seen some patients save up to $4,000 after discovering a hiatal hernia.

TIA

My insurance has approved hiatal hernia surgery and my out of pocket for the sleeve part of the surgery will be $3500. I also had to have a CT scan because of a spot that was tender on my side during my physical, and I have gall stones, so they will be removing my gall bladder during surgery too!

Hey Jen, I ended up getting my surgery cost down to $4900. Still a lot of money but I'm ready to spend that kind of money on taking a healthy step for myself. It took me a long time to get to where I could swallow spending that kind of cash but I'm there now. I had my gal bladder removed back in 2000 so that's one thing I don't have to pay for now. I'm guessing they will remove your gal bladder at the same time as the sleeve?

Yes, they will repair the hernia, remove my gall bladder and do the sleeve all at the same time. I'm nervous but so excited!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
