Sugar Addict

How can I kick this sugar craving? I eat Protein and rarely get hungry, but I crave sugar SO BAD. I have gone four or five days without eating sugary foods but then relapse. Once I eat some then the cravings are considerably worse. I did so well (for almost a week) until my sons 16th birthday and I ate a piece of cake. Then I had a really bad day at work and I fell off completely. What can I eat/take that will help kick this and STOP the cravings? Can you take supplements/vitamins that will help with these cravings? Even eating the Special K Protein Bars keep me craving sugar and wanting more bars.:cry

Have you tried using something sugar free to tame the original sugar craving? SF pudding or Sf fudgesicles or something usually takes care of my chocolate cravings.

I have more problems with the carb laden chips and that sort of thing...I think it is because I haven't found a good substitute!

Kat, try soy crisps, they're pretty good and have much lower carbs that potato chips and soy Protein, too! You'll find them in the "Natural Foods" section of your grocery store.

SRKS72: Try using ONLY stevia to sweeten your drinks/foods with (it is a plant leaf derived sweetener you can find it at health food stores and places like Trader Joes and Whole Foods), it helped break my sugar craving. Google Stevia and Google artificial sweeteners. You'll find lots of info there about why we still crave sugary stuff even when we use Splenda and Nutrasweet. I will very occasionally have a "diet" beverage with Splenda or nutrasweet, but now I make jugs of Decaf iced tea and sweeten it with Stevia and I really don't have a problem saying no to cakes or candies. And I'm well over 350lbs and TRULY loved my sweets and carbs. I don't even crave them anymore.

If you really want to get rid of the craving, in my experience, you have to come clean for at least 3 days. After that, the craving is gone for most.

Also I read that even fake sugars can trigger a craving.

Good luck, I am also an addict and fight it daily.

Yep, fake sugars can trigger a craving, that's why I have given them up in favor of Stevia, it's not manufactured, it's a natural plant derivative.

I do notice that if I have a "diet" something or other (flavored with NutraSweet or Splenda) I seem to want more sweets for a few hours after that.

Now that I've broken the refined simple carb craving, I don't really find myself craving that, either. I brought a pizza home for DH and I two night ago and I LOVED to eat the crust dipped in ranch dressing. But this time, I just scraped off the toppings (chicken and onion) and had no real desire to eat the crust. I could hardly believe it!

I find that it feels like even drinking diet green tea makes me still crave sugar. All I drink is Water and green tea (since being banded). I was just wondering if I cut out all of the diet green tea (aspartame) and drank only Water then ate only meat, nuts and vegetable if I could stop these cravings? Also, I guess they would start back up again if it ate any food with sugar or artifical sweeteners? I know years ago I didn't crave sugar and I could go days/weeks without it and eat a piece of cake (or whatever) and then be fine without it again. I wasn't overweight then. I carry most all of my weight in my stomach area. Could that have anything to do with the sugar cravings?

I am very happy with the band. Since getting the band I have lost 40 pounds (november 2006). I feel successful so far, but it is starting to be such a struggle constantly fighting these cravings.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
