Prevent/Reduce sagging skin associated with rapid weight loss

Recommended Posts

YAY!!! I finally figured out how to start a new thread thanks to Amy C and 2muchfun :)

My lapband surgery is scheduled for 1/21/14. I was hoping to hear from others who have paved the way before me to see if you have any advice for preventing or reducing the amount of sagging skin that often happens with rapid weight loss. I'm a planner and its never too early to start thinking ahead to my future weight loss that WILL happen with a little help from the band.

(P.S. another user named her band - any suggestions for me as I plan to name my band too!! hehehe)

Bad news is, I don't think there's much we can do about the sagging skin issue. Maybe someone else has a better idea?

From what I have read the younger you are (the less time your skin was stretched and therefore damaged) the less hanging skin you will have. Genetics play a role in this as well. Pregnancies? Well, of course they stretch the skin, so more damage. Hydration helps keeps the skin plump and more elastic. Toning exercises. And I use a toning body lotion (Jergen's I think), it does seem to help a little and I figure if I am going to moisturize why not use the toning kind it isn't really any more expensive. Good luck! Hope this helped! (It is what I researched when i had the same question...lol)

Probably slower weight loss helps you have less loose skin, but for some who really watch what they eat and exercise, the weight just falls off faster. Loose skin will be better than fat. You can always buy some Spanx! lol. Best wishes for your surgery.

I'll take the loose skin for weight loss anyday! Looking so forward to my band placement - thx for your support!

Thanks for the reply. I'm working on trying to stay hydrated. I need to be more regimented with body lotion. And as far as exercise, it's just walking for now. I need to research some good toning exercises and try to incorporate that as well. Your post was quite helpful!

I've lost over 100lbs, and have very little loose skin.....

I do not have a definitive answer as to why, but it is probably a combination of things...

Lots of Water...good for skin tone...I go through 32 ozs during my workout alone

Plenty of Cardio exercise...45 minutes in the zone, 5 days a week.....also good for skin tone...

Protein...daily requirements met every single day since surgery..

Sauna....I sit in a 160 - 170 degree sauna 30 minutes, 5 days a week at the gym, and drink Water while doing so...opens and cleans the pores while ridding the body of toxins....THEN an ice plunge (when available), if not then a brief cold shower to tighten up the skin and close the pores......the swedes knew the secret..jumped in the snow afterward...

And last, I use a moisturizer every day head to toe...( I do see a dermatologist for skin issues, although non-existant since loosing weight)

My Wife buys Facial treatments in packages of 5 at the Spa, and I will use one from time to time...but that has nothing to do with loose skin throughout the body...just the face...

I think as one of the others stated, it has a lot to do with your own genetics and your age. I am happy with my sagging body, most of the tiem. But, wish I had the money to have tummy tuck.My surgeon keeps reminding me that I am fine, I am 65. Karen..aka..kll724

How much Protein is your daily requirement? And how can I determine my daily protein requirement? I use fitness pal app and it has me at 42 grams daily but should I try to exceed that?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
