2weeks sleeved and still no energy. Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 12/26/13. I had a 4 day hospital stay. I am felling ok but I have absolutely no energy. It is an effort to shower and dress. I am tired of just sitting around. I want to have some energy. Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it take for you to get your energy level back up?

I am 3 weeks out and having the same issue. Showering and dressing and getting downstairs wipes me out not to mention exercising. For a few days I had a burst of energy in the afternoon and walked for 30 min., got some housework done, stuff like that. These last few days is a whole 'nother story. Sigh...

It is fairly normal from what I see in scouring these forums.

Some escape this but I know I did not completely - I hit a wall and need to nap or seriously rest.

As always, check in with Doctor - do not diagnose this yourself - this was/is serious surgery.

My surgeon told me that it takes 2 weeks for all of the anesthia to completely leave your system.

I felt that way also after my surgery.

Hi nana2mo,

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time with energy. I also had my surgery on 12/26/13. I had a 3 day hospital stay. The first 3 days I was pretty tired, but since then I have been fine and able to work out. I had three friends that had this surgery and all of them said that at first they were very fatigued. I assumed I would have the same severe fatigue, but surprisingly, I've been okay. I am just really struggling with getting in enough Water every day.

I hear the fatigue is absolutely normal, but if you're worried check with your doctor.

I hope you feel better soon!

I had low energy waaaayyy before surgery, so it wasn't much different after. But it was about 3 months before I got back to my normal level of low energy. Even at a year post-op, I still have low energy levels. I had always read the "I can't believe how much energy I have" weight loss stories, still waiting for mine to happen. I have to drink coffee and occasionally take caffeine pills to have what I consider "normal" energy levels.

Also, check to make sure you're getting your Protein and carbs, and that the carbs are spread out through the day.

This is me right now! The first two weeks I felt pretty good. Now I'm exhausted after getting ready to go somewhere. Hopefully this too will pass... Starting purée foods this weekend so looking for a boost from that! Sleeved 12/26

I am 3 weeks out and exhausted. Just followed up with my surgeon. He said I will be tired for a month and just make sure to get in all my Protein, which I am. Hang in there!

This is totally normal. You just had major surgery, and it takes a toll on your body. Another thing that can't be overlooked is the severe reduction in calories you are consuming. It's not enough to support your weight, and even though you probably don't have all the symptoms from hunger you used to have, it still impact your overall sense of energy.

I can remember being exhausted from showering, to the point that I had to lay down afterward. It gradually got better over the course of a few weeks to months. The first couple of weeks were the hardest, and after that I just didn't feel very energetic. I gradually felt a little better every day, and by 2 months felt fairly good, and very good by three months. I heard and read so much about people having so much energy soon after surgery I also thought something was wrong with me, but I suspect people who feel bad just don't come here to post it. As long as you are getting in enough liquids to keep from dehydrating and meeting your calorie/protein guidelines from your doc, this is normal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
